SAN BERNARDINO, Calif.-- In game one of the Friday doubleheader, Cal State East Bay held a slim 2-0 lead, but they blew the game open with six runs in the sixth inning and finished off the shutout behind the complete game effort of
Sierra Clark in the 8-0 CCAA win. The Pioneers fell behind early in game two and couldn't claw their way back and lost 7-4. CSUEB's record is now 1-1 in the CCAA and 2-2 overall. The Coyotes are now 1-1 in conference play and 6-5 overall.
GAME ONE- Cal State East Bay 8, Cal State San Bernardino 0:The scoring got started in the third inning when
Courtney Leyba hit a sacrifice fly to score
Belle Placencia to make it 1-0 Pioneers. That is all the Pioneers would need in the first game, but the Pioneers would keep adding runs in the conference opener. Leyba scored to make it 2-0 after five.
A double by Placencia in the sixth would clear the bases and put the score at 5-0 CSUEB. Placencia would score on a Leyba single to make it 6-0. Leyba would go on to steal second, which allowed
Rose Marston to take home and tack-on a seventh run of the game. The eighth and final run came on a
Gabby Gonzalez double that scored Leyba and completed the six run outburst by the Pioneers in the sixth.
Clark never gave the Coyote bats a chance as she only allowed two hits and struck out nine batters while walking no batters to improve her record to 2-0. The nine strikeouts was a career-high for Clark in her second season with the Pioneers.
Placencia led the offensive attack going 2 for 3 with three RBI's and three runs scored. Marston also had two hits in the first game. Leyba ended up 1 for 3 with two RBI's and two runs.
GAME TWO- Cal State San Bernardino 7, Cal State East Bay 4:The Pioneers got behind 4-0 before they got on the scoreboard in the third inning when
Ali Cerminara singled in Marston. Leyba tried to make it two run single for Cerminara, but was thrown out at home. The Coyotes would answer the Pioneers run in the third inning with two of their own in the third to make it 6-1.
Marston capped-off her day in grand fashion by hitting a solo home run in the fifth inning and a two run homer in the seventh to make it 7-4. The Pioneers couldn't cut into the deficit any further and had to settle for a doubleheader split.
Marston ended up 2 for 4 with two home runs, three RBI's, and three runs scored in the second game. Cerminara went 1 for 4 with an RBI.
Tatiana Beilstein got the start in the circle for the Pioneers and took the loss to drop her record 0-1.
