Ali Cerminara doubled to left field to score pinch-runner
Allison Noble and give the Pioneers a much-needed insurance run. The Seawolves got one in the seventh, but
Tatiana Beilstein got the final out on a fielder's choice got her first win of the season (1-3) in a 4-3 Pioneer win.
Sonoma State took game one ,5-1, to split the doubleheader. The Pioneers record is now 3-3 in the CCAA and 6-6 overall. The Seawolves are also 3-3 in conference play and 6-6 overall.
GAME ONE: Sonoma State 5, Cal State East Bay 1-Sonoma State got on the board in the first inning on a two-run home run by Jena Kaser and led 2-0 after one. The Seawolves extended their lead to 5-0 after five and the Pioneers found themselves having to dig out of a hole.
Down 5 in the sixth, the Pioneers mounted a rally.
Marisa Lerma singled to start the inning and Cerminara walked to make it first and second with nobody out. After a strikeout by
Sierra Clark,
Gabby Gonzalez singled center field and Lerma was able to score from second on a fielding error by the Seawolves Alison Strycula to bring the score to 5-1. The Pioneers weren't able to get any closer and suffered a game one defeat.
Clark received her first loss of the year (4-1) after going four innings and allowing three earned runs on five hits with four strikeouts.
GAME TWO: Cal State East Bay 4, Sonoma State 3-The second game was scoreless until the top of the third inning when
Rose Marston reached on a fielding error to start a two-out rally. Marston would put herself in scoring position by stealing second and
Courtney Leyba would walk to make it first and second.
Lerma took care of the rest by singling to right-center to score Marston and Leyba to make it 2-0 Pioneers.
The Seawolves would strike back for one in the fourth before Marston would double in
Mia Ramirez to give CSUEB back their two-run lead at 3-1.
The Cerminara RBI double came after Lerma was hit by a pitch on the second pitch of the seventh. Noble pinch-ran for Lerma and on just the fifth pitch of the inning, Cerminara gave the Pioneers a two-run cushion in the eventual 4-3 victory.
Beilstein threw her second-straight complete game. This time she got the win after getting a tough-luck loss on Wednesday against Holy Names in a 1-0 loss. Beilstein lowered her ERA to 2.78 after the impressive performance against a SSU team that advanced all the way to the NCAA West Super Regionals in 2015.
Lerma went 2 for 3 with two RBI's to lead the offense. Gonzalez went 2 for 4 for the Pioneers. Marston went 1 for 3 with an RBI and run.
Cal State East Bay and Sonoma State conclude their four-game series with a doubleheader Saturday.
First pitch in game one is slated for 11:00 A.M. Game two will follow approximately 30 minutes after the end of game one.Â
