East Bay Escapes with Thrilling Overtime Win over Cal State L.A.

HAYWARD, Calif.-- Laci Effenberger set career high with 25 points and matched her own single-game school record with seven three-pointers as the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team outlasted Cal State L.A. 81-69 on Saturday night.

The Pioneers have won 10 straight games for the second time this season and have a half-game lead atop the CCAA standings with a 17-2 conference record. CSUEB is now 23-4 for the season, extending the program wins record. The Golden Eagles drop to 6-12 in conference and 8-16 overall.

Less than 24 hours after notching their biggest win of the season against defending CCAA champion Cal State Dominguez Hills on a buzzer-beater, the Pioneers got all they could handle from an athletic CSULA squad. Ultimately 40 minutes wasn't enough to decide a winner, and the Pioneers pulled away in the overtime period. Shannon Bland, fresh off her game-winning buzzer beater on Friday, scored eight of her 22 points on Saturday in overtime to life the pioneers.

"Back-to-back demanding games are the grind of the CCAA schedule," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "After such a big win on Friday evening, we all knew it was going to be a challenge against CSLA. We just couldn't shake them all night."

After a closely-contested first quarter that saw the Pioneers lead 21-19, CSUEB was able to a get a little separation in the second and went to the half leading 37-30.

Cal State East Bay was up 42-32, but the Golden Eagles would go on a 12-0 run to take a 44-42 lead. The Pioneers regained the lead before the end of the quarter and go to the fourth up 50-49.

The Pioneers fell behind 62-58 in the fourth, but showed the veteran squad grit and determination to tie the score 65-65 and get a huge defensive stop on the final possession of regulation.

CSUEB took control of the game in overtime. Bland hit the first two baskets of overtime and the Pioneers would finish off their opponents down the stretch, outscoring the Golden Eagles 16-4.

Bland played 43 minutes to lead the team, finishing 12-for-18 from the free throw line with six rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

"Shannon and Laci were running on fumes, but found just enough energy to score when things were going poorly," said Barcomb. "Big time three's from Laci and key jumpers by Shannon. I relied heavily on those two tonight."

Tori Breshers had a game-high 10 rebounds and four blocked shots. Ashleigh Anderson had nine rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench.

The Pioneers were outshot 42.1% (24-57) to 40.7% (24-59) from the field,, but the long ball was particuarly significant in this contest. The Golden Eagles struggled from three-point range, going 3-17 (17.6%). The Pioneers, meanwhile, attempted a season-high 32 triples and hit 34.4 %.

Cal State East Bay closes out the regular season at home against Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday. the 5:30 p.m. tip-off will be preceded by the annual "Senior Night" ceremony.
