Pioneer Women Tie Team Record For Season Wins after Defeating CPP

POMONA, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay Women's Basketball Team tied the program record for wins in a single season (21) by defeating Cal Poly Pomona 54-39 Saturday. The Pioneers also accomplished another feat against the Broncos by going a perfect 10-0 in CCAA road games this season. CSUEB is now 15-2 in the CCAA and 21-4 overall. CPP drops to 7-10 in the conference and 9-15 overall.

"We've played seven of the last eight games on the road and were able to win," said Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "We stayed focused on our goals and that's a testament to the heart of our team."

The 21st victory didn't come easily as the first quarter saw both teams scored just nine points in the opening quarter. The Pioneers were able to build a 19-13 lead with 2:26 left until the break when Tori Breshers hit a layup. The Pioneers would go to the locker room with a 21-16 lead.

The second half is where the Pioneers grabbed a hold of their opportunity to win #21. The Pioneers went on a 15-4 run to end the third quarter and led 37-27. The fourth quarter was an extension of the end of the third quarter as they built a game-high 45-29 lead when Breshers put in layup with 6:25 remaining.

Cal State East Bay maintained the big lead the rest of the way and now come home to host their final three regular season games of the season.

"Cal Poly did a great job of killing the ball and taking away our momentum in the first half. Second half, we managed to gains some energy and put a little run together," said Barcomb.

Breshers was the star of the game as she scored a game-high 19 points on 8-15 shooting and 13 rebounds.

Shannon Bland also scored in double-figures with 11 points, four rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Laci Effenberger had a game-high three steals and team-high five assists. Madison Craig had eight points, four rebounds, and two steals.

The Pioneers shot 41.3% (19-46) compared with 21.4% (9-42) for the Broncos. CSUEB also won the rebounding category by a 36-29 margin.

"With the slow pace of play, we knew our focus had to be on the defensive end of the floor," said Barcomb.

Like Thursday when Cal State East Bay owned the paint at Humboldt State by outscoring the Lumberjacks 24-8, they held a sizable 28-16 advantage over the Broncos.

The win against CPP also guarantees a top three finish in the CCAA for CSUEB. The Pioneers next opponent, Cal State Dominguez Hills, will also finish in the top three and currently sits in first place in the conference at 15-1.

The Pioneers and Toros will matchup Friday at Pioneer Gymnasium in what should be a very exciting game.

Tip-off between the CCAA powerhouses is set for 5:30 P.M.
