OAKLAND, Calif – Three Pioneers collected double figures as East Bay improved to 4-1 with a 70-65 win over Holy Names University Tuesday night in Oakland at Tobin Gymnasium.
The 4-1 start for CSUEB is the best under fourth year head coach
Gus Argenal and the best start for the Pioneers since re-joining the NCAA Division II.
With the loss, Holy Names drops to 0-4 overall on the season.
Senior forward
Micah Dunhour picked up his second consecutive double-double leading the Pioneers with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Dunhour added three assists and tied a team lead with two steals on 8-for-15 shooting from the field, while sinking five of his six free throws and connecting on his only attempt from downtown.
Freshman
Druce Asah continued his hot streak compiling 18 points, six rebounds, an assists and a steal. Asah went 6-for-10 from the floor, while pacing the Pioneers with three made three-pointers, while collecting a team best four offensive rebounds.
Sophomore
Juwan Anderson dished out an East Bay high six assists. Anderson tallied 11 points, three rebounds, and a steal while leading the Pioneers with 34 minutes on the floor. He went a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe.
Senior guard
Jalen Richard turned in a great overall performance for CSUEB with nine points, eight rebounds, an assist and tied the team lead with two steals. Richard knocked down 5-for-6 free throws for the Pioneers.
Drew Bender led the East Bay bench with four points and a rebound, while
Pierre Carter chipped in two points, five rebounds and a assist.
The Pioneers claimed the rebounding advantage 42-34, while dominating on defense holding the Hawks to 37.5 percent shooting from the field.
East Bay outscored Holy Names in points in the paint 26-22, points off turnovers 19-18, second chance points 13-3 and fast break points 2-0. The Pioneers also outscored the Hawks in both halves.
CSUEB finished the games shooting at a 40.4 percent clip while shooting 86.4 percent accuracy from the foul line.
Head Coach
Gus Argenal is proud of how his team continues to collect road wins early in the season.
"These early road wins are huge for us as a program," Argenal said. "As we continue to battle and handle adversity on the road only helps us continue to build confidence in one other. And we're going to need the confidence to finish out this road trip and as we begin CCAA play."
Jewels Sanders led the Hawks with 21 points and four rebounds off the bench. Jason Webster added 12 points and three rebounds for Holy Names.
East Bay will continue its road trek as they will partake in the Mac Martin Invitational on Friday and Saturday. The Pioneers will play Northwest Nazarene on Friday, November 25 and Academy of Art on Saturday, November 26. Both game will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Art Acker Gymnasium on the campus of Chico State.
