POMONA, Calif – The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw in their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road matchup against Cal Poly Pomona on Sunday afternoon. It was a match filled with firsts for the Pioneers.
It was the first game to end in a tie for East Bay (5-6-1, 1-4-1 CCAA) this season.
The Pioneers lit up the scoreboard first when sophomore
Brett Fuchs put a shot in through the left side of the goal off a corner kick from senior
Steffen Sauer in the 11th minute of gam action.
It was the first goal of the season for Fuchs and Sauer's second assists on the year.
Cal Poly Pomona (9-3-2, 5-2-1 CCAA) responded with a goal of their own in the 15th minute by Luis Najera, Jr to tie the game at 1-1.
Both teams stepped up defensively and allowed no more goals for either team.
The Broncos led the shot advantage 19-11, while the Pioneers out shot the CPP on goal 5-4.
Victor Calderon led the Pioneers with three shot attempts.
Evan Sanchez and
Zach Leon both logged two shots for East Bay. Fuchs,
Christian Gonzalez and Kevin Conley each tallied one shot apiece.
CSUEB first year head coach
Mike Bielski was proud of his younger players stepping and filling in where needed as well as sticking to the game plan.
"The team took a big step in the right direction today, Bielski said." "They stuck to the game plan and kept believing in what we do. It's great to see us improving. I want to acknowledge the players that went in off the bench. We had a handful of starters who were sick and the bench really stepped it up for them. It was a hard fought well earned point."
Freshman goalkeeper
Carlos Moreno led the Pioneers with three saves on the afternoon.
East Bay will finish its conference road slate with a trip to Turlock to square off against Stanislaus State on Wednesday, October 12. The match will begin at 7:00 p.m. in Warriors Stadium.
