Pioneer Men Outlast Late Warrior Surge

TURLOCK, Calif – The Cal State East Bay men's soccer team defeated Stanislaus State 3-2 on Wednesday night to finish their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) road jaunt.
 
The Pioneers improved to 6-6-1 overall and 2-4-1 in CCAA paly. CSUEB also continued their success at Warrior Stadium winning their third consecutive match in Turlock.

The six wins are the most for Cal State East Bay since joining the CCAA in 2009. 
 
Junior Christian Gonzalez scored his second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 28th minute to score the lone goal of the low-action first half of play.
 
Both team turned in an exciting second half with tons of energy in what would turn out to be a thriller.
 
Senior Victor Calderon got things started for East Bay in the second half with a goal on a penalty kick in the 55th minute. For Calderon, it was his third goal of the year.
 
The Warriors responded with a goal by Rafeal Chavez in the 69th minutes of play.
 
Shortly after senior Preston Hale put in a header to the left post in 72nd minute of action for his fourth goal of the season. He was assisted on the play by Calderon. 
 
Chavez would bring the Warriors within one with his second goal of the game in the 75th minute.
 
The Pioneers would hold off the Warriors late rally for the 3-2 victory.
 
The aggressive play by Stanislaus State helped them take a 25-13 shot advantage, including 17 shots in the second half of play. Both team each took six shots on goal.
 
Calderon led the Pioneers with five shots, including two shots on goal, one goal scored and an assist. Christian Gonzalez and Preston Hale each tallied two shots and a goal off the bench for East Bay. Zach Leon added two shots and Kalle Sjogrell put up one shot for CSUEB.
 
Freshman goalkeeper Carlos Moreno racked up a team high four saves for East Bay.
 
The Pioneers will return home for action to host the Chico State Wildcats on Sunday, October 16. The match will begin at 2:00 p.m. at Pioneer Stadium.
