Toros Trounce Pioneers in Straight Sets to Open Road Trip

CARSON, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team sputtered offensively in a 3-0 loss (15-25, 20-25, 13-25) to Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night to open their Southern California road trip.

The Pioneers fall to 6-9 overall and 2-5 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) after mustering just 26 kills and an .073 attack percentage against the Toros (6-9, 3-4 CCAA).

It got off to a rough start, as East Bay totaled just eight kills and hit .028 in the opening set. They bounced back and played better in game two, but they couldn't manage to erase an early deficit as CSUDH continued to have success on the attack, and the Pioneers found themselves down 0-2.

The home team sealed the deal in the third frame, holding CSUEB to five kills and a .000 attack percentage. For the match, the Pioneers made 18 attack errors, seven service errors and 10 receiving errors, and they hit their way into eight Toro blocks.

Kiki Leuteneker led the way with 10 kills, reaching double figures for the ninth time this season and the fifth straight match. Deja Thompson tallied eight kills, while Julie Navarro and Kathy McKiernan added three apiece.

Setter Katie Ireland had 19 assists and finished second on the team with 10 digs, notching her 13th double-double of the season.

Last year when the Pioneers hosted Dominguez Hills, the marathon match lasted five sets, and Darlene Lee broke the school record with 43 digs in one night. Lee didn't approach the record on this night, but she did lead East Bay with 12 digs in the loss.

Remarkably, 10 of Cal State East Bay's last 11 matches have ended in three sets. The Pioneers have a record of 5-5 in those contests, and they'll look to get back in the win column on Saturday evening when they visit Cal State L.A.
