Five-Match Win Streak Snapped by Sonoma State

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team saw its win streak come to an end on Saturday night with a four-set loss on the road at Sonoma State (22-25, 25-17, 18-25, 25-27).

The defending CCAA champion Seawolves (10-9, 8-4 CCAA) retain their second place spot in the North Division with the win.

Both teams attacked with efficiency, as Sonoma out-hit the Pioneers .281 to .241 for the match. East Bay scored more points than the Seawolves on blocks and aces, but the home team racked up a 68-55 advantage in kills.

The first set was extremely tight, with the Seawolves managing to win thanks to a 5-1 scoring run late in the frame. The Pioneers then dominated game two, holding SSU to a .109 hitting percentage to even the match.

East Bay stumbled coming out of the intermission, and it ultmately cost them a chance at the road victory. Sonoma jumped out to a 15-5 lead and never looked back, taking the third set by eight points.

The teams traded points the entire way in game four, and both squads had a chance to win at the very end. Kiki Leuteneker scored several huge points as the Pioneers tried to extend the match, but SSU's Catie Wiesner slammed back-to-back kills to seal a narrow win for Sonoma.

Leuteneker had a monster night, notching a season high with 22 kills. She made just four attack errors and hit .327 on a team-high 55 attempts.

Kathy McKiernan posted a .333 attack percentage with 10 kills and four total blocks. Deja Thompson tallied nine kills and matched McKiernan for the team lead with four blocks. Julie Navarro added seven kills, and Cassidy Caton had five to go along with 10 digs.

Darlene Lee paced the squad with 24 scoops, while Brandi Brucato dug out 19 balls. Setter Katie Ireland finished with 13 digs to go along with three blocks and 46 assists.

With four postseason spots available in the Division, the Pioneers (11-10, 7-6 CCAA) are currently alone in third place in the CCAA North at, but the race is extremely tight with three weeks to play. They have just one match next week when they return to Hayward to host rival Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday Oct. 29.
