ROHNERT PARK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team continued its impressive start to the Fall season, taking second place this week at the Sonoma State Fall Invitational. The Pioneers shot 292-291-294 for a total of 877 (+13) at the par-62 Foxtail Golf Club.

East Bay finished 20 strokes behind the team champion, the host Seawolves (-7), and four strokes ahead of third-place Dominican.

Senior Adam Stone placed third individually, seven strokes behind individual medalist Justin Shluker from SSU. Stone fired a 71 (-1) in Tuesday's final round after shooting 72-69 on Monday, giving him a 54-hole score of 212 (-4). He tallied 11 birdies over the course of three rounds, and finished tie for second in the field -- along with teammate Max Murai -- with 37 pars.

Fellow senior Owen Hutchison was the only player at the tournament with more pars than Stone, leading all 62 players in the field with 39. Hutchison turned in rounds of 71-72-75 to finish in seventh place at 218 (+2). 

Murai was impressive again at the outset of his rookie season and carded the team's second-lowest round of the final day. He followed up 75-77 on Monday with a 73 (+1) today, giving him a share of 25th place at 225 (+9).

Seniors Barrett Taylor and Joel Keylor both stumbled at points this week, but both contributed solid numbers to the team scores as well. Taylor shot 80 in round one and 78 this morning, but he was excellent on Monday afternoon, helping the Pioneers post their 292 with a second-round 73 (+1). Taylor finished in a tie for 34th overall at 231 (+15).

Keylor turned in an 83 (+11) in that second round, but he was excellent for East Bay in rounds one and three with scores of 74 (+2) and 75 (+3). The Alberta native ended up a stroke behind Taylor for the week at 232 (+16).

Next week, the Pioneers will take on several more conference rivals at the Otter Invitational, hosted by Cal State Monterey Bay on Oct. 17-18 in Seaside, Calif.
