HAYWARD, Calif. -- Cal State East Bay senior
Tori Breshers became the all-time leading scorer in the history of Pioneer women's basketball on Thursday evening with a 20-point effort to lead CSUEB in a 60-39 victory over visiting Cal State San Marcos.
The Gardena, Calif. native notched her 1,211th career point in the 21st game of her fourth season at East Bay, passing Pioneer Hall of Famer Antoinette Goode, who held the program record for 28 years.
Breshers' historic performance highlighted a dominant effort by Cal State East Bay, which improved to 17-4 for the season and 11-2 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). She went 7-for-12 from the field and added a game-high 10 rebounds, recording her second double-double of the season.
"Tori had a great all-around game tonight, and she has had a wonderful four-year career at East Bay," said head coach
Suzy Barcomb. "Her growth from her first season until now has been tremendous."
During the first half of Thursday's victory, East Bay submitted one of the most remarkable defensive performances ever witnessed at Pioneer Gymnasium. They held Cal State San Marcos to just six points in the entire half, limiting the visitors to 6.9 percent shooting (2-for-29).
The Cougars found their offensive rhythm in the second half, but it wasn't nearly enough to erase a 22-point halftime deficit. The Pioneers, who entered the contest ranked No. 3 in the nation in scoring defense (52.8 ppg), held their opponents to 40 points or less for the third time in four games over the last week.
"We came out and defended with a purpose for the first two quarters," Barcomb noted. "Our focus was on point and we rebounded well as a team, which led to second chance points. We expended a great deal of energy and you could tell we just didn't have much left to get going offensively. Four games in seven days is very demanding."
Overall, the Pioneers shot 42.4 percent from the field and went 7-for-7 from the free throw line. They completely dominated the glass, out-rebounding San Marcos 51 to 27.
Junior
Katrina Bacovcin turned in an impressive effort, scoring 10 points on 5-for-6 shooting to go along with seven rebounds in just 13 minutes off the bench.
"I thought Katrina gave us a big energy boost in the first half," added Barcomb. "It was by far her best game in an East Bay uniform."
Junior
Remy Puou pulled in nine rebounds for the Pioneers, and seniors
Madison Craig and
Shannon Bland scored six points apiece. Bland also posted seven rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists.
Senior
Laci Effenberger added seven points and three assists, including her 61st three-point field goal of the season. That number leads the CCAA and puts her just one triple shy of tying the school's single-season record, currently held by Amy Elliot.
As she nears the end of a standout career, Breshers continues to move up the Pioneer record books. In addition to holding the all-time record for points and blocks (143), she ranks second in program history in field goals made (441) and free throw made (322), third in rebounds (613), and eighth in steals (135).
An All-CCAA honoree as a junior, Breshers currently ranks fourth in the CCAA in scoring at 14.8 ppg for the season. She's also in the top-10 in rebounds, blocks, and field goal percentage.
"Tori had one of her best nights of the season," Barcomb said. "She gave us outstanding minutes on the defensive end of the floor, trying to take away one of San Marcos' leading scorers. She played a complete game for us tonight."
The Pioneers now have a well-earned weekend off before embarking on a tough four-game road trip, starting Friday, Feb. 5 at Chico State.
