ROHNERT PARK, Calif.-- Just like Friday's win at San Francisco State, Cal State East Bay used an impressive second half to spark another victory. The Pioneers' won 60-56 behind 44 second half points and bolstered their CCAA and overall mark to 9-2 and 15-4, respectively. The Seawolves' conference record falls to 3-8 and are 8-12 overall.
The Pioneers' struggled in the first half, shooting 19.23% (5-26). After coming out of the first quarter with an 11-10 lead, the Pioneers' were only able to score five points and saw the Seawolves' take a 24-16 lead heading to the half.
The second half didn't start smoothly for the Pioneers as they fell behind 31-20 with 5:23 left in the third. But from there, Cal State East Bay would begin to show why they are one of the top teams in the CCAA when they closed out the third quarter on a 13-5 run to trail by only three.
It only took 1:40 into the fourth quarter for the Pioneers to grab the lead at 40-38 when
Tori Breshers hit a layup. The Seawolves' would tie the game twice more, but a
Madison Craig hit a jumper at 6:39 to give the Pioneers the lead for good at 44-42. Cal State East Bay would build their late lead to 56-46 and survive one more Sonoma State burst and head back to the East Bay four point winners.
"We showed amazing resiliency to come back after that disastrous second quarter," said Cal State East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb. "We shared the scoring again tonight and I thought it was critical for us to have different people step up.
Remy Puou was outstanding Saturday, scoring 14 points and grabbing a game-high 10 rebounds. Breshers had 16 points to lead all scorers.
"I thought Remy and Tori were outstanding tonight and their presence was of the utmost importance," said Barcomb.
Shannon Bland had 14 points, including 10-10 from the charity-stripe. Craig was the fourth Pioneer in double-figures with 10 points.
Laci Effenberger led the Pioneers in assists with four. She also had six rebounds and two steals.
Cal State East Bay shot 54.17% (13-24) in the second half to run their total percentage to 36% (18-50). Sonoma State was 44.2% (23-52) from the field. The Pioneers' had 10 more rebounds (32-22) than the Seawolves.
The most glaring statistic from the game is that the Pioneers' got to the free throw line 31 times and converted 23 of them (74.2%). The Seawolves' only got to the line nine times and hit five (55.6%).
Cal State East Bay will take two days off before playing Tuesday at Cal State Monterey Bay. Tip-off is set for 5:30 P.M.
