Pioneers Notch First Win with 3-0 Shutout of NDNU

BELMONT, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team notched a decisive road victory victory over Notre Dame de Namur on Monday afternoon by the final score of 3-0.

After being shutout by a pair of talented squads in their first two matches, CSUEB finally broke out offensively. The Labor Day win was the first of the season for the Pioneers, and it marks career victory No. 99 for head coach Amy Gerace.

"One we settled in today, we found a lot of good opportunities to attack," said Gerace after the game. "Our team as a whole did a better job of problem solving, and our forwards were able to attach their back line."

East Bay controlled play throughout the contest, out-shooting the Argonauts 12 to 5 overall. But it took until the 34th minute before junior Megan Ravenscroft put the Pioneers on the scoreboard. She was awarded a penalty kick after NDNU was given a yellow card inside the box and converted it for the team's first goal of 2015.

The score remained 1-0 until the 65th minute, when a pair of freshmen helped the Pioneers double their lead. Janis Gamboa got free on a long pass over the top from Miranda Gonzalez and beat the goalkeeper one-on-one for her first career goal.

NDNU didn't manage a single shot after that, and East Bay keeper Amanda Valentine needed to make just two saves in the game to record her first shutout.

The Pioneers tacked on their third goal with less than two minutes left to play. Janelle Herrera took a free kick, and fellow sophomore Kianna Lamont headed it to the back post for her third career goal.

"Our midfielders -- Aulani Fernandez, Tia Sidtikun, and Mindy Castro -- did a great job winning balls, which was integral in starting our attack," added Gerace. "Janis scored a nice goal and has continued to adapt to the level of play. We are committed to preparing ourselves for CCAA competition -- the Azusa Pacific game was one to build on, and this game was another positive step for the program."

East Bay is back in action this week when they hit the road to take on Division I squad Sacramento State on Thursday, Sept. 10 at 4 p.m.
