TURLOCK, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team opened the 2015 season on Thursday with a 2-0 loss to Fresno Pacific at the Warrior Challenge, hosted by Stanislaus State.
The Pioneers had several scoring chances in the early going against a talented Sunbird squad, taking seven shots in the first half. However, they found themselves playing from behind for most of the contest after FPU's Alyssa Nakaguchi scored 10 minutes into the game on a free kick from the left side.
East Bay came out of halftime playing aggressively, but despite four corner kicks within the first nine minutes of the second half, they were unable to net the equalizer. FPU immediately came back down the field, and Hannah Coyle found the right corner of the net to make it 2-0.
The Pioneers managed just two shots on goal for the game despite dominating possession in the second half, and the Sunbirds held on for the victory.
"This was a disappointing loss, and we have higher expectations for the outcomes of our games the rest of the season," said head coach
Amy Gerace. "The team responded well in the second half and controlled the play, but unfortunately we weren't able to finish the numerous opportunities we generated. Fresno Pacific did a better job capitalizing when they had chances."
Goalkeeper
Katelyn Oshima tallied five saves in her East Bay debut. Junior
Megan Ravenscroft, CSUEB's leading scorer from 2014, took a team-high four shots, but was unable to find the back of the net.
The Pioneers now have Friday off before playing their second game at the Warrior Challenge against Azusa Pacific on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 11:30 a.m.
