HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team was defeated in straight sets at home on Tuesday evening in its rematch with conference rival Chico State (21-25, 19-25, 14-25).
Along with their victory two weeks ago in Chico, the Wildcats sweep the season series over the Pioneers, who drop to 3-10 for the season and 1-4 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA). Chico's attack was impressive on this night, hitting .366 to improve to 12-4 overall and 5-2 in league play.
"I was disappointed with our team's performance tonight," said head coach
Jim Spagle. "Our leadership, toughness, and poise were lacking. We have talent, but we still have a lot of work to do to get where we want to be as a program."
East Bay gave Chico a good battle in the first set as the teams traded points back and forth. The score was tied 20-20 after a kill by
Kiki Leuteneker, but the Wildcats rallied to win five of the final six points to secure the win.
The Pioneers hung tough in game two, as well, and trailed by just one point midway through the frame. But they didn't have an answer for Chico's attack, as the Wildcats eventually stretched their lead out to six. Hurt by eight service errors in the match, East Bay wasn't able to make an extended scoring run, and the visitors took a 2-0 lead.
Chico kept the momentum coming out of the intermission, jumping out to a 15-5 lead in the third set. The Pioneers made a bit of a rally behind an impressive performance by
Kathy McKiernan, but their deficit was too much to overcome as the Wildcats held them off to finish the sweep.
Leuteneker led CSUEB with 10 kills, reaching double figures for the fourth straight match and the seventh time this season. McKiernan added seven kills with a team-best .400 attack percentage, but the Pioneers hit just .181 as a group on the night.
Darlene Lee notched six kills and nine digs, and fellow outside hitter
Kiani Rayford posted five kills and two block assists. In the middle, freshman
Deja Thompson had three kills and a pair of blocks for the Pioneers.
Setter
Kylie Fraga totaled 21 assists, while
Veronica Fabiano added nine. Senior
Angie Maina, who entered the match ranked second in the CCAA in digs, led all players with 13 scoops on this night.
Next up, the Pioneers are home for a pair of matches this weekend when they welcome in Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday and first-place Cal State L.A. on Saturday. Both contests are set to begin at 7 p.m.
