SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 shutout victory over Cal State San Marcos on Sunday to return home with a split on their Southern California road trip.
The Pioneers (4-6-0, 2-2-0 CCAA) took the lead in the eighth minute and held off the Cougars in a defensive battle. Freshman keeper
Amanda Valentine made four saves in recording her third shutout of the year.
The team really worked hard to secure the win today," said head coach
Amy Gerace. "We're happy to get points on the road in this conference."
The lone goal of the day came off a counter, as freshman
Janis Gamboa fed a pass to
Rachel Robbert down the left side. She made a move to the inside and fired a shot to the far post that found the back of the net. It was Robbert's fourth goal of the season, which ties her for the team lead.
The Pioneer defense made the 1-0 lead hold up over the next 82 minutes. For the game, they were out-shot 10-to-8 by CSUSM, and both squads put four shots on goal.
"Rachel and Janis were able to combine well off the counter and secure the goal," Gerace added. "Overall it was a great weekend with the players. This team continues to come together, and they're a great group to coach."
Next up, the Pioneers return home for a tough game against Cal State Stanislaus on Wednesday, Sept. 30 at 4:30 p.m.
