Pioneer Women Open CCAA Play with Shutout of Cal State Monterey Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay women's soccer team defeated visiting Cal State Monterey Bay by a score of 1-0 at Pioneer Stadium on Friday night in the opener of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule.

It's the second shutout victory in a row for the Pioneers, who improve to 3-4-0 for the season. Junior goalkeeper Katelyn Oshima recorded three saves to pick up her second win of the year.

"I thought tonight was a good game -- Monterey Bay always puts a quality team on the field," said head coach Amy Gerace. "It's nice to open up CCAA play with a win."

East Bay out-shot the Otters 14-to-6 for the game and put six shots on goal. They controlled possession for a majority of the contest and created several more chances than their opponents, but the teams very nearly played to a 0-0 draw in regulation.

It was scoreless into the 45th minute when the Pioneers netted the game's only goal. With the clock ticking down to halftime, freshman Miranda Gonzalez darted a through ball up the center of the field. It hit junior Rachel Robbert in stride as she beat her defender, and then she flipped a shot just past the charging keeper into the net with only one second remaining on the clock. It was Robbert's third goal in the last two games, tying her for the team lead with Megan Ravenscroft.

CSUEB missed a few chances to extend its lead in the second half, but the Pioneer defense was stout. Led by Janelle Herrera and Savannah George, they kept the Otters from scoring the equalizer for the final 45 minutes.

"I really liked the way our team moved the ball in tight spaces," Gerace added. "They continue to come together as a team. Wins don't come easy in this conference, so we will continue to build on this game and prepare for the Gators on Sunday."

Next up, East Bay takes its 1-0 league record into a Sunday afternoon showdown with local rival San Francisco State. The Pioneers and Gators are scheduled to start at 2 p.m. on Sept. 20 following the men's game.
