HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State Easy Bay women's soccer team was topped by visiting San Francisco State on Sunday afternoon as the Gators pulled away late for a 4-1 win. The Pioneers drop to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association.
Temperatures soared near the triple digits under the afternoon sun at Pioneer Stadium, but SF State kept its cool with a strong second half after the teams were tied 1-1 at the break.
"Today's game as a step back for us," said head coach
Amy Gerace. "I thought SF State came out and out-worked us and played like they wanted to win."
The Pioneers found themselves in a hole almost immediately. In the second minute of play, SFSU's Autumn Fox dribbled up the right side and made a nice centering pass to Isabella Nazario, who scored into the top left corner of the goal.
Despite taking eight first-half shots, East Bay couldn't manage to score the equalizer until just before halftime.
Miranda Gonzalez made a great move dribbling into the box and sneaking a pass between two defenders to
Nicole Stamper, who slammed it home into the top left corner. It was Stamper's first career goal, and it made the score 1-1 at the midway point.
Unfortunately, the Gators came out in the second half and scored two quick goals to put the Pioneers on their heels. Bianca Lowe had the ball on the right sideline about 25 yards out, and she attempted a cross that ended up being a perfectly placed shot just over the reach of Pioneer keeper
Katelyn Oshima into the net.
SF State scored again less than a minute later, and they added another goal in the 87th minute to pull away with the road victory.
"I know our team isn't satisfied with losing a game like this," Gerace added. "I expect them to come out this week ready to work and prepare for our trip to San Diego.
Next week, CSUEB hits the road for a pair of matches against southern CCAA squads. They visit UC San Diego on Friday, Sept. 25, followed by Cal State San Marcos on Sunday, Sept. 27.
