CSUEB takes 15th at Pioneer Shootout after Windy Final Round

Final Results: Team | Individual

VALLEJO, Calif.
-- The Pioneer men's golf team finished in 15th place out of 20 schools at Cal State East Bay's home tournament, the 2015 Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout. The squad shot 315 (+27) in Tuesday's final round to close out the week at 940 (+76).

No. 10 Cal State Monterey Bay captured the team championship at +33. Sonoma State (+43) finished second, and No. 3 Chico State posted the lowest score in the third round to climb up to a third place finish at +46.

Just two individuals managed to shoot under par on an extremely windy day at the par-72 Hiddenbrooke Golf Club. Dixie State's Kenny You (+2) claimed individual medalist honors at the event, which served as a preview for the NCAA Division II West Regionals in May.

Eight teams finished within seven strokes of each other, including the Pioneers. They bested conference foes Cal State San Bernardino (+86) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (+88), as well as regional rival Dominican (+77).

Sophomore Adam Stone was CSUEB's highest finisher, placing 12th in the overall field of 108 golfers with a total of 227 (+11) after shooting 77 (+5) in the final round.

Senior A.J. Hebert fired the team's low round for the day with a 76 (+4). The fellow left-hander ended up in a tie for 29th place at 230 (+14) overall.

Sam Lavelle carded his best round of the tournament in Tuesday's tough conditions, turning in a 78 (+6), which put him in a tie for 59th at 237 (+21). Trevor Spade shot East Bay's fourth team score with an 84 (+12) and finished tied for 92nd place at 249 (+33).

Barrett Taylor rounded out the team performance with a third-round 92 (+20), putting him in 102nd place individually at 256 (+40).

The Pioneers also sent four golfers to compete as individuals with some strong results. Ignacio Ognian shot 80 (+8) in the final round, finishing 67th with a total of 240 (+24). Fellow freshman Raja Deal carded 82 (+10) to place 76th at 245 (+29) for the week.

Joel Keylor finished in a tie for 86th at 248 (+32) after shooting 84 (+12) on Tuesday, and senior Elliot Busichio turned in an 86 (+14) to place 98th at 252 (+36) overall.

The Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout is named after the University's former head football and golf coach, who was posthumously inducted into the CSUEB Athletics Hall of Fame in 2014.

East Bay continues its spring schedule next week in Goodyear, Ariz. at the Western New Mexico Mustang Invitational, which begins on Monday, Apr. 6.
