Pioneer Men Fall to League Champs in Season Finale

CHICO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team fell on the road to Chico State on Saturday night by a final score of 87-61 in the final game of the 2014-15 regular season.

With their "Senior Night" victory, the Wildcats (21-6, 18-4 CCAA) capture the California Collegiate Athletic Association regular season championship. The Pioneers finish the year at 6-22 overall with a 4-18 mark in league play.

"All the credit tonight goes to Chico State and Coach Clink's program," said head coach Gus Argenal. "They defended us all night, and they were physical from the opening tip. I want to congratulate them on the CCAA championship."

The Wildcats out-shot the Pioneers 47 to 39 percent from the field as a team. Chico State had a 43 to 27 advantage on the glass, leading to 17 second chance points and 42 points in the paint. They also took advantage of East Bay's mistakes, scoring 22 points off 15 Pioneer turnovers.

"We fought hard all night, but could not get over the hump," Argenal added. "Rebounding was the difference, and we didn't overcome their second-chance opportunities."

Senior Jacari Whitfield led all scorers with 17 points, playing all 40 minutes in his final collegiate game. The San Francisco native did most of his damage at the free throw line, going 10-for-11.

Whitfield finishes the season as CSUEB's leading scorer at 11.5 points per game. In conference play this year, he led all CCAA players with 35.3 minutes per game and a free throw percentage of .903. He also finished second in the league in assists (4.3 per game) and 10th in scoring (13.0 ppg).

He ends his four-year career holding school records with 195 three-pointers and an .855 free throw percentage. Whitfield scored 959 career points for the Pioneers, and he ranks second all-time with 326 assists.

Senior Cody Kale also wrapped up his career on a high note, scoring 12 points on 5-for-8 shooting to go along with five assists and four rebounds. He played all 40 minutes for the third straight night, notching his eighth double-digit scoring performance in the last 11 contests. Kale finished the season first on the team in the field goal percentage (.462), second in scoring (9.7 ppg), and third in rebounding (4.1 per game).

Nick Grieves concluded his career with seven points and four rebounds in the loss. The senior knocked down his 118th three-pointer in his two seasons since coming to East Bay, which is the fifth-highest career total in school history.

Fellow senior Darrick McIntosh also made an impact in his final game, grabbing five boards in 11 minutes off the bench.

Patrick Marr finished off an impressive freshman campaign with seven points and five boards in 30 minutes. He ended up second on the Pioneers and 11th in the CCAA with 138 rebounds for the season.

Paramvir Singh buried a pair of long balls and finished with seven points in 20 minutes. Fellow sophomore Kyle Frakes scored six, and junior Marcus Norman closed out the season with five points and two assists in 24 minutes.

Those eight student-athletes were the only healthy players on East Bay's roster for the latter half of the season after four starters from the opening day lineup were lost to season-ending injuries.

"I really respect the way this team has fought through adversity and stayed together all season," said Argenal. "It's always tough to end a journey with a group of players, but I want to thank our seniors for leading us and for believing in our brotherhood."
