Late Inning Rallies Lead to Split in League Opener

TURLOCK, Calif. – Cal State East Bay softball split its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opening doubleheader on the road Friday night with Cal State Stanislaus. The offenses came alive late in both games with the Pioneers earning a 7-1 game one win, and the Warriors taking an 8-1 game two decision.

Cal St. East Bay 7, Cal St. Stanislaus 1 – F (Game One)
A five-run seventh inning turned the slimmest of margins into a 7-1 cushion for the visiting Pioneers. An Alex Vela solo homer was the first of a stretch in which five out of six batters reached safely courtesy of base hits.

The game was put out of reach as Jaynie MacDonald stepped to the plate with two runners on and belted her first home run of the season. She was one of four Pioneers to collect multiple hits in the game including Allie Kornahrens who opened the scoring with a second inning RBI double.

East Bay's Sierra Clark (3-0) tossed her second straight complete game victory giving up just on run. She scattered 10 hits and struck out a season-high six batters in the win.

Cal State Stanislaus (3-3, 1-1 CCAA) went 10-for-29 (.344) at the plate as a team but managed to plate only a single run. The Warriors offense managed only one extra base hit (a double), and stranded 10 runners on base in game one.

Stanislaus' Cassidy Duke finished 3-for-3 with a double and scored the lone run. Jessica Varady struck out eight batters as the pitcher and went 2-for-4 at the plate.

Cal St. Stanislaus 8, Cal St. East Bay 1 – F (Game 2)
Cal State Stanislaus took a page from the Pioneer playbook and put up six runs in the sixth inning of game two. It pushed a slim 2-1 lead into an 8-1 advantage with only three outs to go.

The host Warriors batted around in the frame collecting seven base hits along the way. A 2-run double from Duke and a 2-run homer from Holly Mooring sparked the game deciding rally.

The CSUS 2-3 hitters in Duke and Mooring combined to go 5-for-7 with five RBI and score three runs in the victory. Pitcher Natalie Rendon tossed 5.2 innings of shutout softball and struck out either Pioneers for her first win of the season.

CSUS was able to come up with timely hitting during Friday's doubleheader. The Warriors went 14-of-36 (.389) with runners on base and 10-of-27 (.370) with runners in scoring position. The Pioneers were 7-of-30 (.233) and 3-of-19 (.158) in those respective categories.

EB starting pitcher Tatiana Beilstein (1-1) was saddled with the loss after surrendering two runs in three innings. Gabby Gonzalez hit a game-tying RBI single in the second inning to avoid the shutout.

Cal State East Bay (6-2, 1-1 CCAA) and Cal State Stanislaus will close out the weekend series with a Saturday doubleheader starting tomorrow at Noon.
