Homers Help East Bay Win League Series with Warriors

TURLOCK, Calif. – Cal State East Bay softball earned 5-3 and 3-1 road wins over Cal State Stanislaus to sweep Saturday's road doubleheader. Home runs from Ali Cerminara, Jaynie MacDonald, and Rose Marston aided solid pitching efforts from Sierra Clark and Tatiana Beilstein to win the series.

"Anytime you win three out of four conference games on the road, it's a successful weekend. There are no easy weekends in the (California Collegiate Athletic Association)," said East Bay Head Coach Barbara Pierce.

Cal St. East Bay 5, Cal St. Stanislaus 3 – F (Game 1)
The Stanislaus (3-5, 1-3 CCAA) 1-2-3 hitters of Nicolette Vizcaino, Cassidy Duke, and Holly Mooring combined to go 5-for-9 at the plate and drive in all three runs. The Warriors did all of their damage in the third inning with Duke laying down an RBI bunt single, and a 2-run double from Mooring gave the home side a 3-1 lead.

East Bay starting pitcher Sierra Clark (4-0) did not allow a runner past second base with the exception of the third inning.

"Sierra threw great all weekend. She was rock solid and did a great job of keeping their hitters off balance," Barcomb complimented.

Clark struck out three in her third straight complete game effort and would go on to earn her fourth win of the season after getting help from a pair of long balls.

A leadoff homer in the fourth from Cerminara, and a two out round tripper from MacDonald tied the game, 3-3. Later in the inning Gabby Gonzalez beat out an infield single and an alert Kelsey LaVaute scored from second base on the play to grab the lead.

Cerminara made an impact with her arm throwing out the potential game-tying run on an attempted steal of second base with no outs on tin the bottom of the sixth. She then delivered an insurance run with a two out RBI double in the top of the seventh.

Cal State East Bay collected eight hits as a team with two apiece from Alex Vela, LaVaute, and Cerminara. Clark needed just 77 pitches, throwing 56 for strikes, to finish the game. Her efficiency in game one allowed her to play a pivotal role in game two.

CSUS pitcher Jessica Varady (1-3) was saddled with the loss after allowing four runs in six innings while striking out five batters.

Cal St. East Bay 3, Cal St. Stanislaus 1 – F (Game 2)
The lone extra base hit between both teams came in the top of the fourth inning from East Bay newcomer Marston. With one swing of the bat she snapped a personal 0-for-11 skid with a 3-run game-winning homer to give the Pioneers the series.

EB starting pitcher Tatiana Beilstein (2-1) exited after scattering five singles over 4.1 innings. Clark came in and tossed 2.2 innings of relief with three strikeouts. Outside of a second inning error the Pioneer pitching duo did not allow a runner to reach third base.

Leadoff hitter Lauren Vestal was the only player with multiple base hits in the series finale.

On Friday the Warriors were perfect on the basepaths going 6-for-6 on stolen bases. On Saturday, Cermianra gunned down 3-of-5 base stealers to keep potential Warrior scoring opportunities to a minimum.

Cal State East Bay (8-2, 3-1 CCAA) will be on the road next weekend against Chico State (1-1, 0-0 CCAA).
