Breshers Races Past 1,100 Points in Blowout Win

HAYWARD, Calif.— Senior Tori Breshers crossed the 1,100-point threshold Wednesday as Breshers and her Cal State East Bay teammates beat Holy Names handily, 69-28 in a non-conference game at Pioneer Gymnasium. The win brings the Pioneers overall record 10-2 and is their eighth consecutive win. The Hawks record drops to 3-9 overall.

Breshers entered the game with 1,094 points and added 20 on 8-13 shooting.Breshers is third all-time on the Cal State East Bay career points list with 1,114. She is 67 points away from passing Leah Thornton for second and 96 points behind Antoinette Goode for first place.

Despite the lopsided final score, it took a while for the Pioneers get going against Holy Names after an 11 day holiday break as they shot 34.3% from the field in the first half. They nearly doubled their shooting percentage in the second half as they shot 66.7% bringing their overall percentage to 46.4%, while scoring 43 points and only allowing 15.

"It took us until the second half to shake off the rust from the holiday break. The second half was a good, solid performance by the team," said head coach Suzy Barcomb.

In addition to the game-high 20 points, Breshers also had a game-high seven rebounds. Senior Laci Effenberger joined Breshers in double-figures with 12 points and dished-out four assists. Effenberger is the best in the CCAA at takeaways and added to her total with three steals.

Senior Madison Craig had eight points, a game-high five assists, and four rebounds. Senior Shannon Bland almost matched Craig's stat-line with eight points, four rebounds, and four assists.

Junior Remy Puou had six rebounds. Junior Shonte Trudeau came off the bench to pour-in nine points, including hitting 5 of 6 from the charity-stripe.

The Pioneers defense stifled the Hawks all game long and allowed a season-lows in points (28) and field goal percentage (18.2%).

"We had very little prep time, but our focus was about playing defense. There shouldn't be any rust to shake off when it comes to defending," said Barcomb.

The Pioneers emphasized scoring in the paint before the game and their 38-12 advantage in that category proves that.

"We wanted to score in the paint and tonight we accomplished that with good, solid post-ups and rim runs," said Barcomb.

After the win against Holy Names to close out 2015 with eight straight victories, the Pioneers will take on CCAA foe, San Francisco State to open 2016 Friday on New Year's Day.

"Great way to end 2015 and now we must get ourselves ready for CCAA play and starting 2016 off on the right note," said Barcomb.

Tip-off against the Gators is slated for 2:00 P.M.
