HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team fell in four sets on Saturday night to visiting Cal Poly Pomona (25-23, 25-19, 25-13, 25-16).
The Broncos improve to 15-11 overall and 11-7 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), putting them in position for the postseason. The Pioneers drop tp 5-21 with a 3-15 mark in league play.
East Bay got off to a hot start, racking up 15 kills in the first set and grabbing a 1-0 lead over Pomona with a narrow victory. Sophomore
Kiani Rayford was dominant in the frame, scoring eight kills.
Pomona picked up its defense after that and held the Pioneers under .200 hitting the remainder of the contest, as the visitors erased their deficit and won three straight games to escape Hayward with a win. The Broncos ended up out-hitting CSUEB .272 to .172 for the match, and they caused problems for the Pioneers at the service line with 10 aces.Â
Rayford had one of her best matches of the season, leading the team with a .283 attack percentage an 16 kills, which is a career high for the Colorado native.
Kiki Leuteneker also reached double figures, totaling 14 kills to go along with eight digs.
Julie Navarro added six kills, while fellow freshman
Deja Thompson matched her six kills and notched four total blocks.
Setter
Veronica Fabiano tallied 34 assists running East Bay's offense and added eight digs. In the back row, senior
Angie Maina posted 26 digs to lead the squad.
Brandi Brucato notched nine scoops, and
Darlene Lee finished with six.Â
The Pioneers wrap up the 2015 regular season this week as they hit the road to take on Stanislaus State on Tuesday, Nov. 10 before returning to Hayward for "Senior Night" and the seaosn finale vs. Cal State San Marcos on Thursday, Nov. 12.
