Notre Dame de Namur (0-5) HAYWARD, Calif. -- This holiday weekend, the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team will host the CCAA/PacWest Thanksgiving Shootout on Friday and Saturday at Pioneer Gymnasium. The Pioneers are looking to rebound after two close defeats at Colorado-Colorado Springs and Metro State to even their record at 2-2.
Against UCCS, the Pioneers held a four-point lead heading to the fourth period, but the Mountain Lions outscored the Pioneers 20-11 in the fourth to win 67-62. Senior
Laci Effenberger drained 18 points, had six rebounds and three steals in 36 minutes. Senior
Tori Breshers netted 17 points and grabbed six rebounds in 20 minutes. Junior
Ashleigh Anderson came off the bench to grab a team-high eight rebounds.
The next night against Metro State, the Pioneers lost 85-80 in overtime. Breshers had a season and team-high 24 points on 10-of-19 shooting in 36 minutes. Senior
Shannon Bland had 19 points on 7-of-13 from the field and six rebounds in 30 minutes. Effenberger's 15 points were aided by four three-pointers. She also had a game and season-high seven assists for the Pioneers. Junior
Remy Puou grabbed a game-high eight rebounds.
The Pioneers' first opponent of the Thanksgiving Shootout Friday will be Notre Dame De Namur. The Argonauts are 0-5 on the season, losing at home last weekend to Central Washington (
80-49) and Stanislaus State (
62-47). Senior Kirsten Liana leads the team in scoring and rebounding at 8.4 points and 7.0 rebounds per game. Freshman Jerusha Paine follows up Liana with 7.8 points and 5.6 boards a game.
Cal State East Bay concludes the tournamwnt with a Saturday matchup against Academy of Art, which enters with a record of 4-3. After dropping their first three games against stout competition, the Urban Knights have reeled-off four consecutive wins. T
hey won 76-66 against Stanislaus State last Friday, then defeated Notre Dame De Namur 76-68 on Saturday.
Senior Jasmin Guinn leads the high-scoring Urban Knights with 19.9 points and 6.7 rebounds per game. Senior Regina Camera follows right behind her with 15.3 points and 6.0 rebounds a game.
Both of Cal State East Bay's games are matinees, beginning at 4 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. Cal State Monterey Bay opens both days of the tournament wth 2 p.m. games. On Friday, the Otters play Academy of Art, and on Saturday they take on NDNU.
