HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Pioneer women's basketball team looks to continue its good start to the 2015-16 campaign when they travel to Colorado Springs, Colo. this week to participate in the UCCS Tournament. East Bay takes on the host, Colorado-Colorado Springs, on Friday before matching up with Metro State on Saturday.
The 2-0 Pioneers are coming off a weekend that saw them defeat Western Oregon by a score of 57-42 and Dominican by a final of 68-58 at their home conference challenge tournament.
Senior
Tori Breshers had a fantastic pair of games, averaging 18.5 points, 8.0 rebounds, and 3.0 steals. That performance was good enough to earn her the first CCAA Player of the Week award of the 2015-16 seaosn. Over the weekend, Breshers moved up to fourth on the program's all-time scoring list with 938 points, passing former teammates
Stephanie Lopez and
Micah Walker. She is already the Pioneers' all-time leader in blocks (118), and she ranks fourth in school history in made field goals (337), third in made free throws (258), and sixth in rebounds (493).
Bresehrs led all players with 19 points in the season-opening victory over Western Oregon, and junior
Remy Puou had 11 points. Senior
Shannon Bland had an all-around good game with six points, six assists and three rebounds, as did
Laci Effenberger with six points, five assists and three boards.
Against Dominican, Breshers posted a double-double with 18 point and 10 rebounds to go along with four blocks. She was clutch at the free throw line in the final minutes to seal the victory, finishing the weekend at 85 percent (17-for-20) from the charity stripe.
Ashleigh Anderson got hot from long distance against the Penguins, finishing with 13 points and four rebounds. Senior
Madison Craig capped off her first weekend as a Pioneer with eight points and eight rebounds.
The Colorado-Colorado Springs Mountain Lions are 1-1 on the new season, defeating Oklahoma Christian 80-60 and losing to Newman 71-64. Junior Brittany Hernandez is averaging 19.0 points per game, and senior Shannon Kelly tops the team in rebounding at 8.5 per game.
Metro State is 0-2, having lost to Texas A&M-Commerce, 63-59, and then Lubbock Christian, 72-44. Sophomore Georgia Ohrdorf is averaging 14 points and seven rebounds to lead the RoadRunners.
After the trip to Colorado, the Pioneers will return home to host the Thanksgiving Shootout on Friday, Nov 27 and Saturday, Nov 28. They play local rivals Notre Dame De Namur and Acadmey of Art, with both games set to tip-off at 4 p.m.
