Pioneer Women Can't Complete Late Comeback in 2-1 Loss

Hayward, Calif. -- Down 2-0 with 17:05 remaining, Kianna Lamont (2) connected on a header to bring Cal State East Bay within a goal of visiting Cal Poly Pomona, but that's as close as the Pioneers would get in a 2-1 defeat Friday night at Pioneer Stadium.  With the loss, the Pioneers record drops to 2-5 in the CCAA and 4-9 overall.  The Broncos' conference record improves to 3-2-1 and 6-3-1 overall.

"Overall I thought the team played well tonight," said head coach Amy Gerace. "We had a great week of training, and I thought they applied the sessions this week to the game. We can still do a better job with details on the field that will have an effect on the outcome of the game."

After a scoreless first half, the Broncos got the scoring started early in the second half when Melissa Martinez chipped it in the back of the net to make it 1-0 Broncos just 3:34 into the second half.

The second goal by Pomona came in the 71st minute when Reanne Macon connected on a long shot for her first goal of the season and a 2-0 advantage.

With the game starting to look bleak, Lamont received a roar from the crowd when her goal went into the net just under two minutes after the second Bronco goal. Nicole Stamper gained her first assist on the season and suddenly the Pioneers were back in it.

Unfortunately, the Pioneers couldn't get the tying goal and now look ahead to their next match Sunday.

The Pioneers were outshot by the Broncos 9-6. Megan Ravenscroft had three shots, followed up by Lamont's two. Rachel Robbert had the sixth shot.

Cal State East Bay returns to action Sunday at Pioneer Field when Cal State San Bernardino comes for a visit. Game time is 2:00 P.M.
