Golden Goal Gives Pioneers Their Third CCAA Victory of Season

Hayward, Calif.-- With a tie staring Cal State East Bay in the face with 4:40 remaining in the second overtime, Tia Sidtikun (1) got control of the ball after a scramble in front of the net off a corner kick and knocked in the golden goal to send the Pioneer fans home happy with a dramatic 1-0 victory Sunday at Pioneer Stadium. Andrea Hernandez had her second assist of the season on the game winning goal.

"I'm really proud of the team today. They worked really hard and I could see a lot of their hard work paying off for them in the games this weekend," said Cal State East Bay Head Coach Amy Gerace.

With the victory, the Pioneers see their CCAA record climb to 3-5 and 5-9 overall. The Coyotes are now 3-2-1 in conference play and 4-5-3 overall.

The Pioneers controlled the shots category, winning that by a margin of 15-4 and got close several times to scoring, but had to wait until the closing minutes to get on the scoreboard. The Pioneers also had 11 corners to the Coyotes 2.

Coach Gerace noted the strong play of the Pioneer reserves and the midfielder's in the teams' win. "I thought our players coming in off the bench provided a level of energy that we really needed. Our midfield worked really hard to help us win balls in the middle of the field and was exceptional at committing to the attack."

Megan Ravenscroft led the team with four shots followed by Hernandez with three. Rachel Robbert had two and Suzanne Bateson, Nicole Stamper, Corryn Barney, Sialei Manuleleua and Nicole Lutz each had one.

"We had opportunities to end that game in during regulation, but it's always nice to see our commitment and work rate pay off with the double overtime victory," said Gerace.

Cal State East Bay doesn't return to the pitch until Friday, Oct. 23 when they travel to Arcata to face Humboldt State. Game time is set for 12:30 P.M.
