East Bay Women Fall 1-0 on the Road to Humboldt State

ARCATA, Calif.--  Humboldt State's Jillian Andersen scored on a free kick late in the first half that would prove to be the game-winning goal in a 1-0 decision over visiting Cal State East Bay on Friday.

With the loss, the Pioneers see their California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) record drop to 3-6 and 5-10 overall. The Lumberjacks improve their conference record to 4-3-2 and 8-5-2 overall.

The Pioneers and Lumberjacks both had four shots on goal, with the Jacks getting nine total shots to the Pioneers seven. The Pioneers had four corners compared with two for the Lumberjacks. East Bay committed five fouls and drew 12 from Humboldt.

Humboldt gained the lead on Anderson's free kick from about 30 yards. Pioneer goalkeeper Katelyn Oshima caught the ball, but the official ruled that she was behind the goalline. That proved to be the game's only goal.

"Our athletes played well, but we we simply didn't execute in the final third of the game," said head coach Amy Gerace. "The controversial call was frustrating for the players after they worked so hard to defend as well as they did. It was unfortunate, but we nonetheless could have done a better job with our opportunites on offense. That will be the focus heading into a tough game on Sunday."

Janis Gamboa had two shots to lead the Pioneers. Rachel Robbert, Mariah Ford, Laura McIntosh, Mindy Castro, and Kianna Lamont all had one shot each. Oshima finished with three saves.

Cal State East Bay next travels to first-place Sonoma State on Sunday for an 11:30 a.m. contest against the Seawolves, who are currently ranked No. 8 in the nation.
