SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team closed out its 2015 fall schedule by taking a share of sixth place at Cal State Monterey Bay's Otter Invitational at Black Horse Golf Club this week.Â
The Pioneers turned in an outstanding effort against a 19-team field that included 10 of the top 50 teams in the country. The shot 300 (+12) as a group in Tuesday's final round to finish the tournament at 889 (+25).
Chico State, ranked No. 2 in the nation, captured the team championship at -5. In second place was No. 5 defending national champion Nova Southeastern (-1), followed by No. 8 Cal State Monterey Bay (+7). The results were extremely positive for East Bay's standing in the West Region, as the Pioneers bested nine regional rivals and six schools ranked in the nation's top 50. They finished even with California Baptist, currently ranked No. 14.Â
Junior
Chad Hall led the way for the Pioneers, finishing tied for ninth place individually in a 100-golfer field that included six players from Division I University of Washington. Hall shot 75 (+3) on Tuesday to wrap up the week with an even-par total of 216. His 67 (-5) in round one, aided by a hole-in-one on the 17th hole, was the second-lowest card by any player in the field.Â
Fellow junior
Adam Stone was consistent throughout the event, following up a 73 and a 75 on Monday with another 73 (+1) in the final round. The left-hander took home a share of 33rd place with a total of 221 (+5) and led the entire field with 42 pars.Â
Junior newcomer
Owen Hutchison fired the lowest round of the day for East Bay with an even-par 72, highlighted by a team-best five birdies. He finished the tournament just a stroke behind Stone at 222 (+6) in a tie for 37th place.
Senior
Joel Keylor and redshirt freshman
Grayson Sorci both carded 80 (+8) in Tuesday's final round. Keylor stumbled a bit after an impressive performance on Monday, but nonetheless finished with a solid three-round total of 230 (+14) and a share of 64th place. Sorci tied for 95th place overall at 243 (+27) for the week.Â
After taking on some extremely tough opponents this fall, the Pioneers now have nearly four months off from competition before their spring schedule resumes on Feb. 22 at the Cal State San Bernardino Coyote Classic.
