Kellogg Gymnasium • Pomona, Calif.Stats • Video HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay hits the road to face a pair California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) squads looking to tighten their holds on a potential postseason tournament berth. The Pioneers will face UC San Diego on Friday, Jan. 30, and Cal Poly Pomona the following night.
Cal State East Bay defeated UC San Diego 74-57 back on Dec. 6 inside Pioneer Gymnasium. The host Pioneers outscored the Tritons 44-21 in the second half to erase a 6-point halftime deficit.
Four different East Bay players scored in double figures led by 12 points apiece from
Mo Fegan and
Stephanie Lopez. Fegan paced the Pioneer bench as it outscored the Triton reserves 26-8 in the win.
Cal Poly Pomona ousted Cal State East Bay 76-60 in Hayward on Dec. 5. The visiting Broncos shot better than 55 percent from the floor and dished out 25 assists on 30 made baskets. The reigning CCAA Player of the Year Jada Blackwell finished with a game-high 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting from the floor.
Tori Breshers scored an efficient 14 points in 22 points on 5-of-6 shooting from the floor. She fouled out and
Remy Puou committed four fouls as the two post players faced off against Blackwell and company down low.
Cal State East Bay at UC San Diego (Preview)CLOSE CALLSUC San Diego's last four games have been decided by a total of 18 points. The Tritons are 1-3 in those games suffering a 65-63 road loss to Cal State L.A., and home losses to Cal State San Bernardino (64-56) and Humboldt State (67-64). UCSD had were winners of five straight before its recent stretch.
PIONEERS RISINGCal State East Bay has won three of its past four meetings with UC San Diego. The Tritons had won seven straight (all by 11 points or more) dating back to the 2009-10 season before The Pioneers earned back-to-back road wins inside RIMAC Arena. Only one of the past 11 meetings between these two teams has been decided by less than 10 points; a 59-50 UCSD win on Feb. 15, 2014.
SHOKOOR HANDEDUCSD's Farrah Shokoor is averaging 15.1 points and 12.3 rebounds in 12 league games this season. She leads the Tritons overall this season in points scored (237), rebounds (207), steals (37), blocks (17), and free throws (69). Shokoor also has 38 assists which is second best on the squad.
WALKER REACHES MILESTONESenior
Micah Walker became only the second Pioneer (
Brianna Terrance) during the
Suzy Barcomb era to appear in 100 games during her East Bay career. Her total will reach 110 if she appears in every remaining regular season game, one shy of Terrance's mark.
Cal State East Bay at Cal Poly Pomona (Preview)THE ONE AND ONLYCal Poly Pomona became the only CCAA team to take down Humboldt State this season. The Broncos dismantled the Jacks 85-52 on Jan. 23, and sit one game behind HSU for first place in the league standings. CPP held the Jacks to just 26 percent shooting from the floor (19-of-73) and did not allow a member of the starting five to score in double figures.
PESKY PIONEERSCal State East Bay nearly won three straight against Cal Poly Pomona including a resounding 83-58 victory on Jan. 3, 2014. The Broncos held on for an overtime victory at Kellogg Gymnasium on Feb. 8, 2014, and are 4-1 defending their home court since the 2009-10 season.
MAGIC NUMBER IS 75Cal Poly Pomona has triumphed in 11 straight games when scoring more than 75 points. The Broncos two league losses were handed to them by UC San Diego (62-50) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (73-69). If the Pioneers can hold them under 75 points, they have a chance to become the first team to defeat Cal Poly Pomona inside Kellogg Gymnasium this season (8-0) barring a Cal State Monterey Bay win over the Broncos the day prior.
