SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team fell on the road Saturday night to Cal State San Bernardino by a final score of 81-63. The Pioneers (4-12, 2-8 CCAA) remain winless on the road, while the Coyotes -- the defending regular season champions of the California Collegiate Athletic Association -- improve to 6-4 in league play.
Junior
Juawnn Springfield led CSUEB with 18 points, and sophomore
Paramvir Singh scored 11 off the bench. But those two career highs weren't enough to overtake the Coyotes, who never trailed in the contest.
"San Bernardino brought great effort tonight," said head coach
Gus Argenal. "They got the right shots for the right players and pushed the ball hard in transition. To win on the road, you have to compete, and there's a small margin for error. The number of missed free throws and turnovers we had didn't give us a great opportunity to get it done."
The Pioneers finished 14-for-28 at the foul line (50 percent). CSUSB, meanwhile, drew 32 East Bay fouls and went 34-for-45 at the charity stripe (76 percent).Â
Cal State East Bay kept the game fairly tight in the first half, shooting 43 percent from the field and 40 percent from three. They went into halftime trailing by just eight at 38-30. Neither squad shot particularly well in the second half, but the Coyotes, led by Jacob Thomas and Isaiah Morton, were able to get to the free throw line consistently down the stretch to prevent any potential comeback by the Pioneers.
Springfield finished 6-for-10 from the field and 6-for-10 at the stripe in posting his highest scoring output of the season. The Fremont native also tallied two steals.
Singh reached double figures in scoring for the first time in his East Bay career while playing a season-high 18 minutes. He had a perfect 4-for-4 night shooting, including 3-for-3 from long distance.
Jacari Whitfield scored 12 points and dished out a team-best five assists, which moves him up to fifth place on the program's all-time career assist list. It also ranks him second among CCAA players with 63 for the season.
Jack Pasquini added seven points and pulled in 10 rebounds to lead the team. It was his fifth double-digit performance of the season and his 10th straight game with at least eight boards. Pasquini's season average of 8.8 per game leads the league.
Cody Kale scored four points on just 1-of-8 shooting, but the senior grabbed seven rebounds, picked up two steals, and recorded three assists.Â
Kyle Frakes turned in another solid effort on the offensive boards. The Thousand Oaks native posted seven points along with five rebounds, four of which came on the offensive end.Â
The tough CCAA schedule continues next weekend when the Pioneers return home to host two of the top teams in the conference in Chico State and Cal State Stanislaus.
