Shooting Woes Continue as Pioneer Men Fall to CSULA

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's basketball team fell at home on Saturday night to Cal State L.A. by final score of 62-50. The Pioneers (4-10, 2-6 CCAA) split their weekend of California Collegiate Athletic Association games following Friday's dramatic win, evening their home record at 3-3 for the season.

Junior Jack Pasquini led the way with 14 points and nine rebounds for East Bay, going 5-for-10 from the field. The Scotts Valley native reached double figures in scoring for the third time in four games and grabbed at least eight boards for the eighth straight contest, adding to his league-leading rebound total.

The Pioneers once again had trouble finding a rhythm on the offensive end, as the Golden Eagles out-shot them 48 to 33 percent from the floor. East Bay also finished 5-for-24 on three-pointers as a team. CSULA controlled the interior, besting the Pioneers in total rebounds (37 to 27) and points in the paint (32 to 18).

The game was tight until about midway though the first half. CSUEB held a 13-11 lead following a layup in traffic by Juawnn Springfield, but Cal State L.A. proceeded to go on an 11-0 run over the next four minutes to grab a nine-point advantage.

The visitors never relinquished the lead after that. East Bay scored seven straight points at one point in the second half to draw within four at 38-34, but they couldn't quite get enough shots to fall to complete the comeback.

"Coach Horton's team was on a mission defensively, and they took us away from what we wanted to do with their aggressiveness," said head coach Gus Argenal. "We turned the ball over too much in the first half and didn't play with the edge we needed to beat a team like L.A."

Springfield scored 12 points off the bench, posting double figures for the sixth time this season. Fellow guards Cody Kale and Nick Grieves turned in six points apiece.

One night after his last-second shot lifted the Pioneers to victory, senior Jacari Whitfield totaled seven points and led all players with five assists. He's now got 283 for his career, just four shy of fifth place on the program's all-time assist list.

Patrick Marr finished with five points and four rebounds. The freshman had an efficient weekend shooting the basketball, going 6-for-11 from the field and 5-for-7 from three-point range in the two games.

The Pioneers hit the road next week to battle a tough duo of league opponents, starting with a Thursday night game at Humboldt State.

"We are getting close," Argenal added, "but that next step is a long one, and we have yet to take it."
