VALLEJO, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished in fourth place at their home tournament, the 2014 Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout, after shooting a collective score of 310 (+22) in Tuesday's final round. The Pioneers finished with a cumulative total of (+49) at the par-72 Hiddenbrooke Golf Club. Junior
A.J. Hebert took third place individually and was named to the All-Tournament team.
East Bay finished 11 strokes behind the team champions, Dixie State (+38). Dominican (+40) and CCAA rivals Sonoma State (+43) and Cal State Dominguez Hills (+59) rounded out the top five schools at the 13-team tournament. The Pioneers led the fiedl in par-5 scoring at (+6) overall.
"The final round didn't go exactly how we had hoped," said head coach
Alan Sue. "But I'm proud of my team and how hard they fought. I'm extremely happy for A.J. He's one of our hardest workers, and it's great to see it pay off. Today was a learning experience as our team continues to grow as golfers and individuals."
Senior
Zain Pervez was in second place after two rounds, but stumbled to an 83 (+11) to Tuesday. The Vallejo native ultimately finished in 13th with an overall total of 227 (+11).
Joel Keylor continued his consistent play, following up a 78 and 76 yesterday with a 77 (+5) today. The sophomore ended up tied for 19th in the overall field of 70 golfers woth a 231 (+15).
The fourth Pioneer team score came from
Joe Furtado-Foster, who finished tied for 29th at 233 (+17) after carding a 77 (+5) in the final round of action.
Sophomore
Barrett Taylor took 46th place with a total score of 241 (+25). Like many golfers on the course, Taylor shot his highest round of the tournament on Tuesday with an 82 (+10).
Senior
Elliot Busichio turned in an 81 (+9) in the final round, but on the strength of his even-par first round, he ended up tied for 21st overall. Competing as an individual, Busichio shot 232 (+16) for the tournament.
East bay is back in action next week for another local tournament. The Pioneers will attempt to defend their team title at the NDNU Argonaut Invitational at Poppy Ridge Golf Course in Livermore, Calif. on Mar. 10-11.
