LIVERMORE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay men's golf team came up a bit short its attempt to defend its team title at the Argonaut Invitational, hosted by Notre Dame de Namur at Poppy Ridge Golf Course. The Pioneers had a solid weekend nonetheless, taking fifth place out of 12 teams with a collective score of 911 (+47).
After a 306 (+18) on Tuesday, East Bay finished just two strokes behind fourth-place Dallas Baptist (+45) and 13 strokes behind conference rival Sonoma State (+34). Chico State captured the team championship, shooting just two strokes over par for the tournament.
A.J. Hebert was the Pioneers' top finisher individually. The junior shot a 76 (+4) in the final round to close out the week at 224 (+8) in a tie for 13th place. Chico State's Justin Wiles shot six under par to top the field of 65 golfers.
Barrett Taylor was competing unattached for East Bay, but he fired the team's lowest round of the tournament on Tuesday with an even-par 72. He ended up in a tie for 20th place at 227 (+11) overall.
Joe Furtado-Foster shot 79 (+7) in the final round and finished at 229 (+13) in 24th place. Fellow sophomore
Joel Keylor was right behind him in 25th place at 230 (+14) after carding a third-round 78 (+6).
Seniors
Zain Pervez and
Elliot Busichio both finished tied for 29th with identical totals of 232 (+16) for the tournament. Pervez fired a 77 (+5) on Tuesday, while Busichio notched his lowest round of the week with a 75 (+3).
The Pioneers led the field in par-three scoring at +17 for the three rounds. Hebert and Furtado-Foster were tied for the best individual par-three performance at +1.
East Bay has a couple of weeks off from competition before the team travels to Silver City, NM to compete in Western New Mexico's tournament on Apr. 7-8.
