Hot Start Fizzles Out to UCSD

Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's basketball suffered its sixth straight defeat on Saturday night falling 59-50 to California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) foe UC San Diego inside Pioneer Gymnasium. The Tritons closed out the first half on a 27-6 scoring run and led by at least two possessions throughout the second half.

Cal State East Bay blitzed UC San Diego (13-9, 10-8 CCAA) over the opening five minutes building a 14-2 lead. Stephanie Lopez scored three of her team-high 14 points to cap off the lengthy scoring run.

The Tritons received outstanding individual efforts in each half starting with reserve Cassie MacLeod. She knocked down three 3-pointers and scored 11 of her 12 points in the opening half to spark her squad.

In the second half it was Megan Perry's turn to take over as she scored 11 of her team-high 14 points in the second half. She went 3-for-5 from distance after going 1-for-6 from long range in the opening period.

CSUEB came as close as four points in the second half after Rachel Finnegan scored two of her 11 points with 4:35 left. She posted her first career double-double with the Pioneers after matching career-highs with 11 points and 11 rebounds.

East Bay had won the previous two meetings including a 78-58 road win over UC San Diego back on Jan. 10. The Pioneers have yet to defeat the Tritons in five tried inside Pioneer Gym since joining the CCAA in 2009-10.

Cal State East Bay (12-13, 9-9 CCAA) will host Cal State Stanislaus (13-9, 10-8 CCAA) on Friday, Feb. 21, at 5:30 p.m.
