Pioneers Bucked by Broncos in League Opener, 76-60

HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay dropped its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) opener 76-60 inside Pioneer Gymnasium on Friday night to No. 22 ranked Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos shot better than 55 percent from the floor as post players Jada Blackwell and Ashley Lovett combined for 37 points and 16 rebounds on the night.

6484"We've played with a makeshift lineup throughout the season and tonight was no different. We didn't have the size to battle (them) down low," said East Bay Head Coach Suzy Barcomb. "The physical nature of the game played to (Cal Poly Pomona's) strengths, not what we do well."

Both Tori Breshers and Stephanie Lopez hit the floor hard and were slow to get up in separate shot attempts near the rim. Breshers was effective while on the court scoring 14 points on 5-of-6 shooting, but was limited to only 22 minutes due to foul trouble. Lopez led the Pioneers with 16 points despite matching her season-low scoring total.

CPP's Blackwell picked up two early fouls and was limited to only eight first half minutes. Lovett picked up the slack and accounted for 12 points and seven boards as Cal Poly Pomona (3-2, 1-0 CCAA) extended its halftime cushion to 13 points. Lovett ended Friday's contest with a game-high 10 rebounds and completed her double-double with 17 points.

Blackwell dominated the second half scoring 13 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor to finish with a game-high 20 on the night. The Broncos finished with 25 assists on 30 shots as the two 6-foot seniors were the targets on most offensive possessions.

East Bay's Micah Walker made her first start since suffering an injury in the first half of the team's season opener back on Nov. 14. She played 31 minutes and finished with 14 points highlighted by a 7-of-9 performance at the free throw line.

"It's the first time Micah has played extended minutes since coming back. She brought us some scoring from the wing spot as well as getting on the glass," praised Barcomb of Walker's performance.

Cal State East Bay (4-2, 0-1 CCAA) will host UC San Diego (3-3, 1-0 CCAA) on Saturday, Dec. 6. The Tritons earned a 68-57 road win over Cal State Monterey Bay to opener their conference schedule.

"The CCAA is a grind. Every Friday and Saturday we will be challenged and tonight was no different. We have to bounce back with more energy, effort, and passion tomorrow night," added Barcomb.
