SEASIDE, Calif. –
Shannon Bland scored the game-winning basket with 31 seconds left to give visiting Cal State East Bay a 62-60 league win over Cal State Monterey Bay on Saturday night. CSUMB's Stephanie Sack missed the potential game-winning 3-pointer on her team's final possession as the Pioneers completed the regular season sweep.
"We ran a play for
Stephanie Lopez at the 2-minute mark and Shannon found her for a big 3-pointer. Then Shannon took it to the rim and made a very tough shot to give us a two point lead," praised East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb following the team's fifth straight win over the Otters.
Tori Breshers was the focal point of the East Bay offense as she totaled 14 of her game-high 22 points in the first half. She accounted for nearly half of the Pioneer points as the teams headed into halftime deadlocked 31-31.
Trailing by four Sack was fouled on a 3-point attempt and made two of three free throws to cut the deficit in half. A steal and dish from teammate Jenna Bandy set up Sack for the game-tying fastbreak layup in the final minute of regulation.
"Both teams battled all night long. It was an intense game that neither team deserved to lose. The final two and half minutes took an eternity. We feel fortunate to come out of here with a huge win," Barcomb added.
Cal State East Bay (8-2, 3-1 CCAA) will resume action on the road Friday, Jan. 2, at San Francisco State (0-7, 0-3 CCAA).
