Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's basketball won Saturday night's home exhibition meeting with Cal Maritime 73-66 inside Pioneer Gymnasium.
Stephanie Lopez led all players with 23 points and six assists in the win.
Cal State East Bay faced its largest deficit of the night at 55-50 near the midway point of the second half. Jenifer Keys scored two of her 10 points to cap off an 11-2 Keelhaulers run as the visiting side looked for its first win of the season.
The Pioneers immediately responded with a Lopez layup on the ensuing possession and a
Shannon Bland transition 3-pointer to tie the score and force a Cal Maritime (0-3) timeout. A
Tori Breshers layup on the team's next offensive possession with 8:20 remaining gave the Pioneers a lead it would hold until the final horn.
"Cal Maritime is a quality team, with some great shooters and they hit the glass hard. We had some positive aspects that we can build upon. However this game gave us plenty of areas we need to focus on prior to our upcoming contests," said East Bay Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb.
The top shooter for the Keelhaulers was Joie Camalo's who finished with 21 points. Teammates Jenifer Keys and Karissa Booker each added 10 points in the loss.
Micah Walker finished with an efficient 15 points on 6-of-9 shooting from the floor. The senior added a team-high four steals and grabbed a pair of crucial second half offensive rebounds.
"Our energy was good. We fought through some adversity and that is always a good sign. We received positive offensive production tonight out of Stephanie and Micah…Micah came up big on the glass late in the game for us," complimented Barcomb.
Bland filled the stat sheet with 11 points, eight rebounds, three assists, and two steals in her 31 minutes of action. Breshers finished with 13 points and nine rebounds including five on the offensive glass.
Cal State East Bay dominated near the basket outscoring Cal Maritime 46-20 in the paint. Lopez led the charge on the fast break as the Pioneers scored 18 points in transition. It was a much needed boost for a team that connected on only 2-of-15 (.182) shots from distance and 21-of-35 (.600) from the foul line.
"We must continue to battle through our numerous injuries and grind out games until we can finally have a healthy team. We will continue to evolve as a team and as each player gets healthy we can really get down to business of discovering our identity," said Barcomb.
Cal Maritime was able to stay close knocking down eight 3-pointers courtesy of a 5-for-10 effort from Camalo. She was 6-for-6 at the charity stripe while the rest of the squad made 8-of-15 attempts.
Cal State East Bay will official open its 2014-15 campaign on Friday, Nov. 14, versus Saint Martin's.
