Box Score TURLOCK, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's soccer closed out the 2014 season with a 3-1 road win over Cal State Stanislaus on Thursday at Warrior Stadium. In his final collegiate game, senior
Rica Guerra scored two goals in the final 15 minutes to give the Pioneers their first league win of the season.
"For us to come out here and win like this says a lot about our character and quality. The guys executed the gameplan and played with intensity and pride," complimented East Bay Head Coach
Andy Cumbo of his team's performance. "We've had trouble scoring goals (in league play), but tonight we didn't have that problem."
Cal State East Bay (5-8-5, 1-6-4 CCAA) never trailed in the match after
Michael Tieku opened the scoring late in the first half. The junior forward received the lead pass from
Kellen Crow and dribbled down the left side towards the corner of the 18-yard box. His low strike scooted in to the far side netting in the 42nd minute.
Cal State Stanislaus (6-8-3, 4-5-2 CCAA) turned up the offensive pressure in the second half taking 10 of its 14 shots and earning nine of its 14 corner kicks over the final 45 minutes. A long range attempt from Christian Madrigal tied the match 1-1 as the hour mark approached.
Guerra, who had yet to score a goal in 25 previous appearances in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) matches, would cap off his career with two goals in his final 10 minutes on the pitch. All three Pioneer shots on target went for scores in the victory.
East Bay goalkeeper
Adrian Topete made five saves in the victory. Senior
Kramer Gudgeon entered in relief over the final minutes to close out his collegiate career.
"I'm proud of the guys for their determination. I'm happy our 13 seniors will remember their final collegiate game as a positive and successful experience," added Coach Cumbo.
Cal State Stanislaus earned the sixth and final berth into the CCAA Postseason Tournament. Cal Poly Pomona came from behind for a 2-1 victory over Cal State L.A. to earn the regular season title.
