Box Score HAYWARD, Calif. – An eight save effort from goalkeeper
Adrian Topete and second half score from
Chris Lara played the biggest factors in a 1-1 double overtime draw with Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday night inside Pioneer Stadium.
Cal State Dominguez Hills (8-6-2, 6-2-1 CCAA) seized momentum as Ali Nazari scored with only 70 seconds left before halftime. Edson Lemus set up the initial score as the Toros looked to extend their current win streak to five matches with a Friday victory.
Off the heels of a three score, three assists, nine point game on Tuesday, Lara saved arguably his most impressive score for the team's return to league action. He gathered a loose ball off a throw-in from the right side at the top of the 18-yard box. Â Lara's strike curled into the far upper corner as his teammates sprinted to join the senior scoring leader in the post score celebration.
Cal State East Bay nearly snatched victory late in regulation as
Jeremy Romero's high poke tapped the ball away from the grasp of CSUDH goalkeeper Chase Gentry. The Toros netminder was able to retreat quickly enough to smother the attempt and make one of his six saves in the match following the
Christian Gonzalez shot in the 87th minute.
"The team worked hard for 110 minutes. They are all competitors, led by a great senior class. We never gave in," praised Head Coach
Andy Cumbo.
The Toros managed to take five of their 18 shots in the overtime periods, but Topete stopped both on target tries and preserved the point for the Pioneers. CSUDH earned a 10-4 advantage in corner kicks, and a slim 18-16 margin in shots taken.
Cal State East Bay (4-7-5, 0-5-4 CCAA) will host No. 17 ranked Cal State L.A. (12-2-0, 8-1-0 CCAA) on Sunday, Oct. 26.
