HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's soccer erupted for seven goals in Tuesday's victory over Antelope Valley inside Pioneer Stadium. Senior
Chris Lara played a part in six of the team's seven goals with three scores of his own and assists on three others for the host Pioneers.
Lara became the first player since
Andy Cumbo took over as head coach of the program in 2009 to record a hat trick. He also managed to tie a 31-year old program record with three assists on his way to recording nine points in the victory.
"It felt awesome getting a hat trick today. I couldn't have done it without the help of my teammates. We have been working hard, and it paid off today," said Lara. "(The hat trick) was definitely on my mind. I wanted to get that third goal any way I could."
Lara netted the first two goals of the match within the opening 16 minutes. The first came on a cross from
Javier Martin, initially set up by teammate
Christian Gonzalez. He would have nearly 75 minutes to complete the illusive hat trick after converting a penalty kick which was awarded after an Antelope Valley (1-11-0) defender committed a handball foul inside the 18-yard box.
Lara would go on to dish out an assist on the next three Cal State East Bay scores. Adrian Maldanado finished off a cross from
Rica Guerra to make it 3-0 at halftime. Lara then found Guerra near the penalty kick spot in the 70th minute as his teammate's right-footed finish put the home side ahead 4-1. A close range lead pass to
Javier Martin only two minutes later padded the lead to four.
Lara's hat trick was complete in the 80th minute as he struck a low bouncing shot with his left foot near the top of the 18-yard box. The ball bounced above UAV goalkeeper Jose Figueroa for his team leading fifth score of the season.
Fellow senior
Trey James capped off the scoring with his first goal of the season in the 85th minute.
Duke Driggs found the striker near the penalty kick spot and James' right footed blast whizzed past the visiting Pioneers defense for the goal.
Adrian Topete made a sprawling save during the opening 20 minutes of the match. He gave way to
Steven Morgan who cleaned up the final 70-plus minutes of action.
UAV's Henry Roque helped his side avoid the shutout with a redirecting header off Sergio Ayon's free kick in the 68th minute.
Cal State East Bay's seven goals today are the most in a single game since a 7-0 win over Northwest Christian on Oct. 28, 2006.
Cal State East Bay will return to California Collegiate Athletic Association play when it hosts Cal State Dominguez Hills on Friday, Oct. 24.
