Premier Soccer Field - San BernardinoLive Stats HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay men's soccer hits the road this weekend in search of its first California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) victory in 2014. The Pioneers will have chances on Friday, Oct. 17, at Chico State, and Sunday, Oct. 19, against Cal State San Bernardino.
Cal State East Bay at Chico State (Match Preview)Cal State East Bay (3-6-3, 0-4-2 CCAA) has not defeated Chico State (6-5-1, 1-5-0 CCAA) since joining the CCAA in 2009. If the Pioneers were to snap that streak on Friday, they would jump past the Wildcats in the league standings with four conference matches remaining.
Chico State picked up its first league victory of the year with a 2-1 overtime decision at Humboldt State. Matt Hurlow's penalty kick conversion in the 94th minute not only put the Wildcats in the win column, it handed the Jacks their first league loss of the year.
Chico State is among the lowest scoring teams in the CCAA with only four goals in six matches. The Wildcats have taken the second fewest shots (52) and amassed the fewest assists (2).
East Bay goalkeeper
Adrian Topete will likely get the start and hopes to tame the Wildcats offense. He has made 31 saves this season and played over 1,000 minutes this season in front of the Pioneer net.
Two is the magic number for the Cal State East Bay offense. The Pioneers are 0-5-2 this season when scoring less than two goals, and 3-1-1 with two or more scores.
Cal State East Bay at Cal State San Bernardino (Match Preview)Cal State San Bernardino (6-4-0, 2-4-0 CCAA) went on the road to pick up its first two league wins of the season. Victories over Sonoma State and Humboldt State puts CSUSB within two points of the sixth and final playoff spot into the CCAA Postseason Tournament.
The Coyotes have dominated the recent series with the Pioneers winning all seven meetings since 2009 by a combined 19-1 score. Last season CSUSB escaped Hayward with a 1-0 overtime victory.
Juan Carlo Gonzalez played in the team's opening two matches of the season and made his return in Friday's win over Sonoma State. He has scored four goals, including all three game-winners, in just three contests this season.
CSUSB has allowed the most goals (14) after six CCAA contests this season. The Coyotes surrendered multiple goals in each of their first five league matches before Sunday's shutout win over Humboldt State.
East Bay's
Michael Tieku leads the team with three goals and nine shots on target.
Javier Martin is tops on the squad with three assists, and is tied with Tieku having racked up seven points this season.
