Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State East Bay volleyball team fell in three sets at Cal State Monterey Bay in a midweek match Wednesday night (14-25, 19-25, 16-25). The Pioneers (5-7, 2-5 CCAA) are still in search of their first victory at the "Kelp Bed" as members of the California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA).
For the match, the Otters out-hit the Pioneers, .265 to .048, and out-blocked them, seven to two. They recorded more kills than East Bay in all three frames, held the Pioneer middle blockers to just two kills combined, and limited East Bay to 32 total points, their lowest total in a match this season.
CSUEB never led in the first set. With the score at 7-6, Monterey Bay went on a 5-0 run to pull away, and they finished by winning eight of the final 10 points. The Pioneers had their besyt chance in game two, as the squads traded points until it was 14-14. The Otters managed to win the next three points, and never relinquished the lead. East Bay got back within one point, but the home team won four straight to clinch the set.
Th Otters kept the pressure on the Pioneers after intermission and carried their momentum to three-set sweep. They opened game three on a 4-1 run, and they pulled away quickly with an eight-point run to grab a 16-6 lead. East Bay battled back, but it was too big a deficit to overcome, and Monterey Bay notched their third win in the last five matches.
Amber Hall led the Pioneers with 12 kills and finished with 11 digs to post her fifth double-double of the season.
Kiani Rayford and
Samantha Bruno each had six kills.
Veronica Sanchez reached a season high and led all players with 20 digs at the libero position.
Ashia Joseph tallied assists on 23 of the team's 29 kills, and the senior added six digs.
The Pioneers return home to Hayward this weekend for a pair of matches. They host SF State in the "Battle of the Bay" on Friday night and welcome in Sonoma State for "Dig for the Cure" Night in support of breast cancer research the following evening.
