Pioneers Take Sixth at CCAA Championships as Herzog Earns All-Conference Honors

PASO ROBLES, Calif.
--- The Pioneer men's golf team had an excellent final day at the CCAA Championships, posting the second-lowest team score of the third round with an even-par 288. Cal State East Bay finshed the tournament in sixth place with an overall total of 884 (+20). Cal State Monterey Bay won the team championship at the par-72 Hunter Ranch Golf Course with a score of 845 (-19). 

Said head coach Alan Sue, "I'm very pleased with how the team finished strong on the last half of the back nine with our post-season hopes in the balance."

After play completed, Pioneer senior Chris Herzog was named to the All-CCAA team. Herzog shot a 70 (-2) in the final round, his lowest score of the tournament. He finished the event tied for 18th place at 221 (+5). For the 2013-13 season, Herzog won two tournaments (the CSUMB Otter Invitational and the NDNU Argonaut Invitational), finished in the top-10 of three others, and posted a 73.65 stroke average. Below is the complete All-CCAA team.

Fellow senior Blake Ahlin shot the low round for the Pioneers on Tuesday and finished as East Bay's top golfer for the tournament. Ahlin's third round 69 (-3) was tied for the lowest score on the course, and he's one of just three golfers in the field to shoot two rounds in the 60's. The Leemore native posted an overall score of 215 (-1), which placed him 10th individually. He and Herzog both converted 12 birdies, tied for fourth-most in the tournament field.

Senior Andy Quintero turned in a second straight solid round of 74 (+2) to close out the Championships. His overall score of 225 (+9) ranked him 28th overall.

Freshman Matt Lee was a stroke behind Quintero in today's round. He posted a 75 (+3) to finish the tourament at 229 (+13). Lee placed 30th in the field of 40 golfers. Junior Sam Lavelle carded a 78 (+6) in the final round, giving him a total of 231 (+15), which put him in a tie for 33rd place overall.

In today's third round, East Bay was just three strokes behind Sonoma State, who led the field with a score of 285. With a 288, the Pioneers tied with Chico State and outplayed the champion Otters (291), as well as Cal State Stanislaus (291) and UC San Diego (294).
