Box Score SEASIDE, Calif. – Brianna Terrance poured in a game-high 18 points leading the Cal State East Bay women's basketball team to a 45-39 CCAA victory over Cal State Monterey Bay on Tuesday night. The win snapped the Otters' seven-game win streak and gives the Pioneers three straight victories after last weekend's sweep.
Terrance was 7 of 13 from the field and 3 of 5 from the three-point area as the Pioneers (7-7 CCAA, 9-9) won their third straight game and snapped a seven-game Cal State Monterey Bay winning streak.
“It was a very hard fought win tonight against a proven CCAA champion,” Pioneer Head Coach
Suzy Barcomb said. “Bri was outstanding tonight. She hit big shot after big shot.”
Meaghan Cichoke added 10 points and
Sarah Finlay scored seven for the Pioneers. For the ninth time this season,
Marlene MacMillan led the Pioneers on the boards with 10 rebounds.
Cal State Monterey Bay was led in scoring by Brittani Jefferson with 16 points.
The Pioneers, ranked 12th in Division II in scoring defense, held Cal State Monterey Bay to a season-low 39 points. East Bay was impressive on the boards outrebounding the Otters by a 44-31 margin.
Finlay accounted for all the Pioneer points on a jumper and 3-pointer in the first five minutes of the first half as East Bay took a 5-4 advantage. The Pioneers held a one-point lead until the Otters went on a 7-0 run highlighted by a Danielle Padilla three-pointer to regain the lead 11-5 with 11:41 left.
Terrance nailed a three-pointer and added a layup as the Pioneers closed the gap to 11-10 with 8:39 remaining. A three point play by Terrance and a free throw by
Nia Bravo with 3:38 left, enabled the Pioneers to take a 16-15 advantage.
The Pioneers held the Otters scoreless the remaining 3:38, and added a Cichoke 3-pointer to hold a 19-15 halftime lead. A tough East Bay defense limited the Otters to a 23 percent shooting percentage from the field in the first half.
East Bay maintained a 21-17 lead with 18:10 left in game on a Cichoke layup. After the Otters trimmed the lead to 23-22, Cichoke nailed a three-pointer to extend the Pioneers' advantage to 26-22 with 14:13 remaining.
The Pioneers enjoyed their biggest lead of the game, 31-24, with 11:23 left on a Terrance 3-pointer. Terrance continued her hot shooting with her 15th point of the game as the Pioneers maintained a seven-point advantage at the 8:10 mark.
Following a 4-0 Otter run, Terrance hit a 3-pointer with 6:17 left, giving the Pioneers a 36-30 lead.
The Pioneers limited the Otters to four points the following 5:28 and extended their lead to 42-34. Cal State Monterey Bay (10-4 CCAA, 13-4) had a final push with a 5-0 run to cut the Pioneers' lead to 42-39 with 24 seconds left.
Walker, the Pioneers team leader from the charity stripe at 77.9 percent, hit two free throws with 23 seconds remaining to clinch the well-deserved victory for the Pioneers.
“We stayed together as a cohesive unit until the very end,” Barcomb said. “We knew
Monterey had been involved in several tight games so they were not going away. We made enough free throws late in the game to earn a big road win.”
Cal State East Bay will return home on Friday to face Cal State Dominguez Hills as part of Homecoming 2013. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
