Final Results
SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — The Cal State East Bay men's golf team finished in 11th place out of 15 teams at the Coyote Classic, hosted by Cal State San Bernardino this week. The Pioneers finished with an overall score of 907 (+67), 40 strokes behind the champions Cal State Stanislaus. After a 306 on Monday, the team shot rounds of 300 and 301 today at Arrowhead Country Club.
Senior
Chris Herzog finished in fourth place out of the 77-player field, firing a 214 (+4) for the tournament. He was six strokes behind the individual winner and two stokes out of second place. Herzog followed a 72 yesterday with consecutive rounds of 71 today, finishing off an impressively consistent effort. The Oregon native improved his overall score in this event by 20 strokes over last year's 66th-place finish.
Herzog was the only Pioneer to place in the top-40, but the other four qualifying golfers all finished within seven strokes of each other. Senior
Andy Quintero posted 79 and 78 in his first two rounds, then busted out an excellent two-over 72 in the final round. This gave him a final score of 229 (+19), second-best on the team and tied for 45th overall.
Senior
Blake Ahlin followed yesterday's 78 with a solid 75 in today's early round, but he stumbled a bit in the afternoon. Ahlin posted an 80 to finish at 223 (+23), which tied him for 58th in the field.
Sophomore
A.J. Hebert wasn't able to top his first-round 77 in either of today's rounds. He shot 80 in the morning and came back with a 78 in the afternoon to finish as the fourth Pioneer qualifier. His score of 235 (+25) was tied for 61st overall.
Junior
Sam Lavelle was just one stroke behind Ahlin at 236 (+26) for the tournament, which was good for 63rd place. Lavelle played well in today's early round with a 76, but he sandwiched it between two 80s in rounds one and three.
Sophomore
Elliot Busichio also competed for East Bay, finishing just three strokes behind Lavelle at 239 (+29). He shot a 76 yesterday, followed by rounds of 81 and 82 on Tuesday to finish tied for 67th.
Next week, Cal State East Bay hosts the Tim Tierney Pioneer Shootout at Hiddenbrooke Golf Course in Vallejo. Last year, the Pioneers won their home event by seven strokes, and Herzog claimed the individual crown with a score of 221 (+5).
