HAYWARD, Calif. – Cal State East Bay women's basketball will open California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Friday, Dec. 6, against Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Pioneers will make their home debut, and conclude the weekend schedule on Saturday, Dec. 7, versus Cal State L.A. inside Pioneer Gym.
Friday will be the first game inside Pioneer Gymnasium for starting newcomers
Danielle Peacon and
Stephanie Lopez. This season Peacon leads the Pioneers with 10 blocks and Lopez is tops on the squad with 13 steals.
Cal State East Bay vs. Cal State Dominguez Hills – (Friday, Dec. 6)
Cal State Dominguez Hills (2-1, 0-1 CCAA) has played the fewest (3) official contests this season among CCAA teams. The Toros will face the Pioneers whom have played the most (7) including two nationally ranked top-10 teams and an NCAA Division I squad.
CSUDH opened their season with a slim 70-67 loss to Cal State L.A. back on Nov. 16. The Toros enter the weekend after earning back-to-back wins over Point Loma Nazarene and Cal State San Marcos.
CSUDH leads the conference in shot attempts taking more than 71 per contest. The high volume attack is led by Division I transfer Taylor Champion (14.0 ppg, 11.7 rpg). Champion played for Oregon State and most recently UC Irvine before joining the Toros.
Sophomore Monay Lee (12.0 ppg, 9.0 rpg) has averaged 15 points over the past two games and recorded a double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds against Point Loma Nazarene. Monay led last year's squad averaging 14.6 points per game.
In their most recent meeting on Feb. 8, 2013, Cal State East Bay took down Cal State Dominguez Hills 63-43 inside Pioneer Gym.
Sarah Finlay led all players with 15 points, and
Micah Walker added 12 in large part to a 3-for-6 shooting performance from beyond the arc.
CSUDH finished last season 9-17, 8-14 CCAA and one game away from securing the eighth and final CCAA Postseason Tournament berth. Dominguez Hills is slotted to finish sixth in this year's CCAA final standings according to the
Preseason Coaches Poll.
Cal State East Bay vs. Cal State L.A. – (Saturday, Dec. 7)
Cal State L.A. (3-1, 1-0 CCAA) won three straight to open the season before falling to Point Loma Nazarene 74-69 on Nov. 30. The Golden Eagles have scored 70 or more points in all four contests, and currently lead the CCAA averaging 76.5 points per game.
Paige Melville (17.0 ppg, .591 3PT%) leads the team in scoring this season. She has knocked down 13-of-22 triples this season, highlighted by a 7-for-9 performance from downtown on her way to 31 points against Cal State San Marcos (Nov. 29).
Transfers Aiwekhoe Okungbowa (13.0 ppg, 9.3 rpg) and Destinee La Fountain (13.0 ppg, 11.8 rpg) make up the top three contributors for CSULA. Okungbowa leads the CCAA in free throw attempts per game (9.2) and Fountain is tops among league qualifies in rebounding.
Cal State L.A. ended Cal State East Bay's season last year in the first round of the CCAA Tournament. However the Pioneers have won three of the past four games against the Golden Eagles inside Pioneer Gymnasium.
Brianna Terrance scored 26 points in 29 minutes over the last two games against Cal State L.A. This season she leads the Pioneers averaging 15.4 points per game. She is one of four player to average double figure scoring through seven games including
Danielle Peacon (13.1),
Stephanie Lopez (11.1) and
Sarah Finlay (10.7).
