CORNING, Calif.
--- The Pioneer men's golf team has begun the 2013-14 season on a high note. Cal State East Bay took third place at the InterWest Wildcat Classic, hosted by Chico State at the par-72 Sevillano Links. With rounds of 296 (+8) and 297 (+9) on Monday, the Pioneers posted a combined team score of 593 (+17). The tournament was originally scheduled for three rounds, but Tuesday's action was cancelled due to extremely high winds.

The Pioneers finished 22 strokes behind the champions Chico State, the only school under par, and 14 strokes behind second-place Cal State Stanislaus. CSUEB was 14 strokes ahead of CCAA rival UC San Diego and 20 strokes better than Cal State San Bernardino.

East Bay placed four golfers in the top-20 of the 81-player field. Elliot Busichio paced the Pioneers with rounds of 71 (-1) and 74 (+2), putting him in a tie for ninth place with a 145 (+1). He was the only member of the team to shoot under par on Monday, although he was not the only one to turn in an impressive card.

A.J. Hebert followed up a 76 in the first round with an even-par 72 to finish at 148 (+4), putting him in a tie for 16th place.

Newcomer Adam Stone was right on Hebert's heels, carding 73 and 76 to close out the tournament with a 149 (+5). Fellow newcomer Zain Pervez, competing unattached, also shot a 149 (+5) with rounds of 74 and 75. The pair finished tied with three other golfers for 20th place overall.

Joel Keylor was also solid, finishing in the top half of the field. He fired 76 and 75 for a two-round total of 151 (+7), tied for 39th place. Joe Furtado-Foster rounded out the scoring for East Bay, turning in cards of 76 and 82 to finish at 158 (+14), tied for 57th.

The Pioneer men are back in action next week at the Sonoma State Men's Invitational in Rohnert Park, Calif.
