SUNNYVALE, Calif.
--- The Pioneer women's cross country team prepped for the CCAA Championships with a strong showing in the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Santa Clara, on Saturday. As a team, the Pioneers finished second among non-Division I teams in the 6k Collegiate Open behind Fresno Pacific, although they posted a faster team average than the Sunbirds. The Pioneers finished ahead of Division II Cal Baptist (ranked in the top-10 regionally) as well as CCAA rivas Sonoma State and Cal State Monterey Bay.

Alexa Torres led the Pioneers with a lifetime best time of 22:46.3. Torres led all Division II runners, beat 20 CCAA competitors, and was seventh overall out of 205 competitors.

Robin McClinton, competing in only her second race of the season, ran 23:33.9, good for 12th place. McClinton was closely followed by Julie Scully, who also finished in a lifetime best time of 23:37.8.

"This was a spectacular race for our top three finishers," Pioneer head coach Ralph Jones said. "They ran a nice, controlled race and tried some different things that will help them in the CCAA Championships next week."

Celina Vera, making her season debut, was 25th in a time of 24:18.4.  Angie Gonzales (59th) crossed the finish line in 25:34.9, while Iris Martinez rounded out the Pioneer scoring in 26:32.4, good for 78th place.

On October 26, the Pioneers will compete in the CCAA Cross Country Championships, hosted by Chico State.

"As a team, we have a lot of confidence going into the CCAA Championships," Jones said. "Things are coming together, and I'm looking forward to a strong performance next week."
